Standard 5 Essay

As a music teacher, I have selected a variety of repertoire for my students to explore various time
periods, cultures, composers, etc. at different developmental stages. I know how to select quality
music for my students through score study and research. In my undergraduate time at K-State, I
have conducted graph analyses, unit studies, and background research on various pieces. When I
select repertoire, I make sure that the music is ethical, has teachable concepts for said age group,
and will make a meaningful addition to any concert or performance. In addition, I look to
program music from different cultures, minority composers/writers, and various time periods.
With these considerations, my students will be set up for success in exploring and performing
quality and inclusive music. In addition, I know how to facilitate student self-evaluation of
music. By completing assignments personal to them (ex: personal reflections, small group
discussions, personal playing tests), my students will make greater connections by evaluating
where they can improve. This will benefit the growth of not only the individual student, but the
entire program. Finally, I know how to implement these skills at all developmental levels. I have
programmed music for the elementary music classroom, middle school band, high school band,
small ensembles, and solo student work. This includes music from various cultures, flex-
arrangements, women composers, and the like.

My students will benefit from my standard implementation through an inclusive music

repertoire, evaluations, and participation in these activities throughout the entire music program.
My students will experience music exploration through research and student-lead music
selection. They will conduct music research projects with the goal of facilitating deeper
connections to music. By doing this, they will learn how to analyze, interpret, and present their
findings. For example, at the time of the concert, my students will present their research projects
related to the pieces we have performed. This will allow my students to create and share their
understandings of world music, minority composers, a certain time period, etc. With this
information, they will also have a say in selecting future repertoire for both them and the
ensemble. In addition, my students will manage self-evaluations throughout the year. This will
benefit their ability to learn from themselves and assess what is going well, and what they need
to improve on. These skills and activities will be implemented across the entire music program,
PK-12.
