1. Construction Procedure for Secant Pile Wall

1.1 Guide Wall
Prior to starting the construction of the pile wall a reinforced concrete guide wall has to be
installed on the wall axis.
Steps of installation:
- Excavate ditch
- Set out axis and corner points (by surveyor)
- Place blinding concrete on level ground as support for formwork if necessary
- Erect prefabricated formwork with stiffeners
- Countercheck location of formwork by surveying
- Place concrete
- Remove formwork
- Secure position by internal bracing
These steps are performed consecutively on the wall axis.

1.2 Drilling
1.2.1 Work Sequence
The basic layout of the wall is a series of unreinforced concrete primary piles and secondary
piles.
The primary piles will be constructed first with required center to center spacing.
The secondary piles will be drilled within two constructed primary piles, thus overcutting
adjacent constructed primary piles.
The sequence of piling operations will be arranged in a way to avoid disturbance of adjacent
freshly poured piles.

- Installation of temporary casing with oscillator (If required) and with required casing
diameter.
- Drilling down to final depth according to approved pile design with drilling rig attached
telescopic Kelly-bar and attached tools of corresponding diameter.
- The borehole is supported through partly full depth by the temporary casing.
- Drilling down to final depth by BAUER BG drilling rig with telescopic Kelly-bar and attached
tools such as augers of the corresponding diameter.
- Cleaning of pile toe with bucket.
- Pouring of plastic concrete by tremie tube method in temporary cased borehole by service
crane/BG and truck mixer.
- Withdrawal of temporary casing by Bauer BG drilling rig.
- Shifting of equipment to the next location.

Refer to Appendix 2 for General Layout and Elevation (Drawing Nr: 1609T01-01) drawing for
sequence and depths of the piles.

1.2.2 Drilling Primary Piles

The primary piles will be drilled with a hydraulic rotary drilling rig of BG. The pile hole will be
stabilized and guided by temporary casing.

1.2.3 Drilling Secondary Piles

The secondary piles will be drilled with a hydraulic rotary drilling rig of BG. The piles will be
stabilized and guided with a steel casing. The casing will be installed with the rotary drive of
the BG rig in advance of the excavation of soil inside the casing, performed by means of auger,
bucket and core-barrel.
The casing string is formed of sections, which are connected with flush screwed joints. The
casing shoe is equipped with a ring of teeth which will enable cutting into adjacent concrete
of primary piles.

1.2.4 Control of Accuracy

Construction of the secant pile with sufficient verticality is of great importance for cut-off wall.
System details and methods to ensure the correct positions of piles are as follows:
- Accurate guide wall
- Type of drilling equipment
- Tools
- Rope Inclinometer
- Verticality measurement before concreting. The target vertical
accuracy will be 1/100.
A reinforced guide wall will be constructed prior to start of piling. It
will be accurately set out by a surveyor and rechecked as built. This
guide wall will act as main guidance for accurate position of piles.

1.2.5 Drilling Equipment

The BG drilling rig is considered sufficient to excavate even the deep
piles. The base carrier, a Sennebogen or O&K is specially built for the
drill rig for high performance along with high quality.
Beside the capability to excavate the deep piles the machine offers
various tools for the quality control data for the operator such as
depth.
Equipment noise emission is in range of 100-120 dB(A).

1.2.6 Kelly Bar and Rotary Drive

The design requirements with
respect to the required pile
depths can be achieved using
a Bauer telescopic Kelly bar.
The standard Kelly bar can be
extended depending on the
type of bar used. Special
technical features provide the
bar with sufficient stiffness to
transmit the torque of the rig
to the drilling tool.
The BG is mounted with a
Rotary drive KDK. All further
tools as Kelly drive adapter
and casings fit to the selected
piling diameter.
When installing the casing the verticality is checked with a precise spirit-level. Required
corrections can be easily made by moving the top end of the casing with the turntable.

1.2.7 Tools / Casings

The temporary casing string for pile construction consists of individual casing pieces connected
together in sufficient quantity to reach the required depth. The connection is made with high
quality screws.
The extreme stiffness of the casing together with the stiff joint connection ensures a vertical
hole.

1.2.8 Drilling Tools

The drilling tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly bar. They are loosening the soil and
taking out the spoil from the borehole.

1.3 Concreting
1.3.1 Plastic Concrete Mix Design
The concrete and its components will comply with the relevant Standards and will be chosen
by MC.
- Prior to starting works a trial mix will be prepared to check suitable mix proportions,
workability and strength, including type and quantity of additives.
- Workability of fresh concrete will be checked at the borehole prior concreting. The
slump and slump flow value shall be 210-230 and 480-580 mm, respectively.

1.3.2 Installation of Concrete

Ready mix concrete will be supplied to site with truck mixers. Concrete will be placed with a
tremie pipe to avoid segregation and ensure continuous, dense concrete quality.
Concrete is filled into the tremie pipe through a hopper.
During concreting the tremie pipes will be kept continuously immersed in the fresh concrete
by a minimum requirement. While the concrete is rising from bottom to top, sections of the
tremie pipe string will be taken out to fulfill the requirement of a minimum 3 m embedment
of the bottom of the string into fresh concrete. The sequence of tremie tube sections will be
recorded during installation in order to avoid the unintentional removal of a section too long
for minimum immersion as expressed above.
Concreting will end when clean concrete will reach the surface or when the concrete level is
approximately 3 m above theoretical cut-off level in order to ensure consistent quality of
concrete along the entire pile bore.
Concreting of one pile will be
performed in one continuous
Hopper
operation.
One tremie pipe string consists
of:
- 1 hopper with lifting rope
Lifting Cap Support Fork
- Tremie pipes with male and
female connections
Tremie Pipe
- 1 lifting cap
- 1 tremie support fork
O-Ring
O-rings in conjunction with
grease will ensure adequate Seil Rope
water tightness at the joints of
the tremie pipe sections. The

drilling rig.

2. Quality Control
2.1 Concrete Control
It has to be ensured that the delivered concrete is in compliance with the technical
specifications and the practical requirements for the pouring process/piling works.
Before the actual concreting of a pile starts, slump and slump flow tests will be made for each
mixer concrete trucks by the Main-Contractor on site to confirm the workability of the
concrete. The supplier of the concrete makes test cubes of a certain percentage of batches
from concrete taken from the trucks on site and tests them as per requirements and
specifications.

2.2 Accuracy Control

- Survey and checking of guide wall location
- Control verticality of pile bore during drilling
- Control of concrete level during and after concreting

2.3 Check of Excavated Soil

The excavated spoil will be continuously observed to confirm the soil report. In case of any
variation, the construction method and the used drilling tools may be adapted to the new soil
conditions, if required. Type of soil will be recorded in a log.

2.4 Determination of the Final Depth

Upon reaching the designed depth and cleaning the pile base, the final depth will be con-
firmed additionally to the online check of the drill rig itself or by ballasted measurement tape.

2.5 Concrete Testing

It has to be ensured that the delivered concrete is in compliance with the technical
specifications and the practical requirements for the pouring process.
Before the actual concreting of a pile starts, slump and slump flow tests will be made by the
supplier to confirm the workability of the concrete. The supplier of the concrete makes test
cubes of a certain percentage of batches from concrete taken from the trucks on site and tests
them as required.

2.6 Pile Records

The following data will be assembled for each pile:
- Record of soil strata
- Drilling depth
- Concrete consumption
- Dates and times of all operations
A sample of Pile record Sheet is given in Appendix A.
