FOR ALUMINA FLURIDE STORAGE

METHOD STATEMENT FOR EARTHWORK CUTTING AND FILLING, PCC, RCC ETC.

1. TITLE OF ACTIVITY TO BE PERFORMED: Method Statement of Earthwork in Excavation and filling for
Building foundation for both outside and inside of the plant area, for development of LCS building foundation
excavation work, PCC, Reinforcement work, RCC work, Shuttering work, Fixing of embedment etc.

2. PURPOSE: The purpose of this method of statement is to define the procedures to ensure that the proposed
materials and workmanship to be used at the site are complying with the condition / requirements as stipulated in
the specifications.

3. SCOPE: This method statement covers the requirements for all earth works up to and including the preparation
of formation level of bottom of foundation. This method statement describes the controlling elements during
the execution of earthworks PCC, Reinforcement work, RCC work, Shuttering work, Fixing of embedment etc.

4. REFERENCE:
Standards, guideline of BALCO, guideline in approved HSE action plan of contractor, relevant rules and
regulations etc. to be referred.

5. MANPOWER DEPLOYMENT: (1) Supervising Engineer – 1 no.


(2) Supervising Foreman – 2 nos. (3) Surveyor – 1 no. (4) Survey Assistant- 1 no. (5) JCB / Poclane Operator –
2 nos. (6) Hyva Driver – 5 nos. (7) Un-Skilled Worker – 12 nos initially.

6. TOOLS & TACKLES REQUIRED: 1. Total Station 1. JCB / Poclane/ Hydraulic breaker and
excavatorExcavator – 1 nos. 3. HYVA – 24 nos. (For Earth Disposal at designated location), 4. Welding machine,
5. Hydra, 6. Hand Tools to be utilized by Un-Skilled Manpower for earth dressing, corner cutting, manual disposal
in un-accessible locations i.e. Manual Spades, bucket (Kadai), Shovel etc.

7. ATTACHMENT OF P&I DRAWING OR SLD:


 Location and partial foundation layout is attached.

Location of Work: proposed location is demarcated as area 31 in the main layout drawing.
8. PROCEDURE FOR EXECUTION OF THE JOB:

SETTING OUT:
 Prior to any commencement of any physical works, the surveyor will carry out demarcation works and
establish bench marks on site. Upon obtaining all the necessary survey data, a joint survey to check existing
ground levels shall be carried out with the Client.
 To Record levels before excavation in Level Register.
 Continuous check of levels during the excavation.

 To Do the final leveling, dressing manually to ensure against excess excavation.


 To Record levels of Soft disintegrated Rock, Hard Rock etc. as and when the strata varies.
 Trenches and foundation pits shall be securely fenced and cordoned off with precautionary signage for
safety.

EXCAVATION OF CUTTINGS
 The excavation of cutting shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant approved drawings and to the
levels, widths and heights shown thereon.
 Any excess depth excavated below the formation level exceeding tolerance of 300mm shall be made good
by backfilling with suitable material of similar characteristic of that removed and compacted in accordance
with specifications.
 Finish level shall be recorded in accordance to survey practice and jointly inspected in the presence
of Engineer-In-Charge/Client.

 The side slopes of cuttings and embankments shall be as per the approved drawings.
 Where the excavation reveals a combination of suitable and unsuitable material the excavation shall, unless
otherwise agreed with the Engineer, shall be carried out in such manner that the suitable materials area
excavated separately for use in the works without contamination by the unsuitable material.
 The hauling of excavated material to areas of fill shall proceed only when sufficient spreading and
compacting plant/equipment are operating at the place of deposition to ensure placing and compaction.
 Unsuitable excavated material shall be removed and carted away to an approved area after approved by the
Engineer-In-Charge/Client.
 Depth of the excavation will be same as mentioned in the sectional drawing and the depth may vary in place
to place.

ROCK EXCAVATION
 For greater depths, the excavation profile shall be widened by allowing steps of 50cm on either sides at
every 2m from the bottom. Alternatively the excavation may be done to give a side slope of 1:4
 Excavation in rock may be carried out by a tracked bulldozer and ripper or by the use of blasting with
explosives or any other method approved by the Engineer.
 After it has been established that the excavated material is rock and after the area where such rock exists has
been defined, the Contractor shall incorporate the rock in the embankment.

EXCAVATION FOR PITS AND TRENCHES


 All trenches and pits under roads shall, where possible, be excavated, backfilled and compacted before road
construction commences.
 The sides of the excavation shall be adequately supported at all times.
 Trenches and pits shall be kept free of water.

FILLING
 Filling low-level areas shall be to the level of sub grade as designated. After completion of clearing and
grubbing, the Contractor/B&R shall carry out the necessary leveling in order to control the thickness of the
layers of fill.
 The existing natural ground shall be scarified in place to a minimum depth of 75mm for the full width of the
embankment. The scarified material shall be leveled and compacted to a minimum of 95% maximum dry
density.
 Where an existing embankment is being widened, the existing embankment slope shall be trimmed and
compacted into benches of minimum width 1m and depth 500mm before placing and compacting each layer
of new embankment material unless otherwise directed by the Engineer to suit particular circumstances.
 Each fill thickness shall not exceed 350mm.
CONCRETE WORK
 All concrete work shall be carried out as per the relevant approved drawings.
 The concrete will be produced as per the guidelines of relevant IS codes and RMC or Batching plant or
mixture machine will be used for the concrete production.
 Shuttering and the reinforcement work is to be carried out as per the approved drawing and will be take
clearance through competent authority before casting the structure.
 Pouring of concrete shall be done by the directly through chute or manual head load or by pump for which
concrete pipe line should be carried out by the respective gang.

BOLT FIXING WORK


 Approved drawing should be issued before starting the work.
 Anchor bolt should be checked at site by the competent authority before fixing in the foundation.
 A temporary arrangement for hanging and positioning of bolt to be made by zigs and fixtures by welding
with main reinforcement bars.
 Before and after the fixing proper survey to be checked by total station and auto level machine.
 After proper positioning of bolts top level to be checked by the surveyor or site engineer or supervisor.
 After necessary checking anchor bolts to be finally tighten with the temporary structure.
 Before pouring the concrete bolt thread should be protected properly.
 After completion of concreting pouring position of the bolt to be checked again and temporary zigs and
fixtures has to be removed.
 After backfilling of the structure handing over protocol to be submitted to the client for erection.
Concrete Demolition Methods
The main methods used to demolish concrete are summarized below.
Pressure Bursting
Pressure bursting is the best option in situations where a dust-free, controlled and relatively quiet concrete
removal is required. Pressure bursting can be mechanical or chemical: in both cases, holes are drilled into the
concrete and lateral forces are applied.
 In mechanical bursting, the concrete is split with a hydraulic pressure machine.
 In chemical bursting, concrete is split through the insertion of an expansive slurry.
 Once split, the concrete is removed by hand or with a crane.

Pneumatic and Hydraulic Breakers


This method is typically used in demolition projects involving foundations, pavements and bridge decks. The
complexity of this method will depend on the strength of the concrete, the amount of steel reinforcement, the
hammer size and working conditions.

Machine-mounted breakers can perform demolitions in a range of 100 to 20,000 foot-pounds at 300 to 800
blows per minute. These breakers can be controlled remotely and they use a telescoping boom for easy reach.
Some are even designed for underwater demolition.

Ball and Crane Method

This is one of the oldest and most common demolition methods, where a crane uses a 13,500-pound wrecking
ball to demolish concrete structures. The ball is dropped or swung into the structure, and only highly-skilled
operators should perform ball and crane demolitions.

Concrete can be easily broken down with this method, but additional work may be required to cut steel
reinforcement. Also consider that this method produces plenty of dust, noise and vibration. The size of the
building that can be demolished depends of the size of the crane, the working area available, and the proximity
of power lines.

Dismantling

Concrete elements can be cut using a saw, thermal lance (in the presence of reinforcing steel) or high-speed
water jets. Concrete pieces are then removed by crane, allowing the complete demolition of a structure with
little noise and dust, and minimal impact on the surroundings. This method is beneficial when building portions
such as slabs or walls are being removed.

9. AFFECTED SYSTEMS DURING EXECUTION OF JOB: (Man/Machine/Material/Environment/process


and other departments). Whether any multiple jobs will be carried out at the same location or not, to be checked
and Safety precautions to be planned accordingly.

10. INSPECTION AND DOCUMENTS TO BE CHECKED: as relevant to the activities i.e. TPI Certificate
physical fitness of the persons involved, PTW, JSA to name a few.

11. SAFETY PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES TO EXECUTE THE PARTICULAR JOB


RELATED TO HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT:

Any inherent precautions, which need to be planned and coordinated with other, affected agencies/ departments/
process. The points mentioned below may be viewed as examples only. There may be many more of these.

Environmental Safeguards

The measures to be taken by the Contractor shall be addressed to the prevention of any damage or pollution to
the environment at the site and adjoining areas, viz.:
 (i) Disposal of waste materials and construction equipment on completion of works – To be immediately
get connected with a third party for its earliest removal from the project location.
 (ii) Air dust and noise pollution from construction activities (if any) Sprinkling of Water to resist the dust
pollution by spreading it through wind flow
 (iii) Labor camp – Electricity, Drinking Water, Toilet Facility, First Aid facility etc.
 (iv) Effluent treatment and waste disposal – To be disposed of to the nearest disposal point as earmarked
by Client/BALCO
 (v) Social disturbance caused by the presence of the temporary labor force – Induction training and
upgradation skilled training to be conducted at periodic intervals.

14. Temporary Traffic Diversions and Traffic Crossings


 (i) Details of any temporary traffic diversions that may be required in order to execute the works safely –
To be complied
 (ii) Proposed length of diversion – To be decided whether required or not. If required, will work out with
Engineer-In Charge of BALCO/VEDANTA
 (iii) Duration of operation of diversion – 30 days in week wise intervals(if required)
 (iv) Constructional details of diversion including signage – To be complied
 (v) Details of proposed traffic management, including liaison with the police and concerned authorities –
To be complied.

15. MONITORING AND FOLLOW UP ACTION:


 Continuous supervision, with signalman during excavation and heavy vehicular movement, traffic
diversion points (if required).

NOTE:
 1. Method Statement (with layout drawings & Lift Plan) and JSEA must submit to Safety Department at
least 48 Hours of Job Execution, else it will not be consider.
 2. Approved Job Safety Analysis to be attached with every Method Statement prior to execution of the
work. The Control/mitigation measures to be discussed through PEP talk with the working group and
daily checklist to be filled up by execution Supervisor who must be aware about the Method Statement
and ways of mitigation of hazards.
