6. DESCRIPTION

• Before starting the works ensure latest versions of the documents are being used at
site.

• Even though the site is a newly reclaimed where the xxx Project work limit is to be
undertaken, there are existing ground services that were already previously installed.
As work progresses on the site, the Site Engineer/ Site Supervisor is to ensure that
earlier installed services are not been disturbed by any new excavation.

• Any excavation work in xxxx Project limit, Appropriate Detecting tools and As- Built
record to be referred prior to excavation and do trial hole as per work requirement to
identify the existing services.

• Before starting the excavation work, barricade the area to be excavated, safety
signage’s will be placed and Excavation Permit & Confined Space permit will be issued.
A safety officer will always be monitoring all times the excavations site including night
works, if needed.

• Confined space permit will be submitted subject to risk assessment briefed to trained
workers. Gas monitors will be always available and be used when deep confined
spaces in deep excavations are encountered.

• The surveyor will mark and layout the trench alignment between the two manholes
and the depth of the trench from the existing ground level.

• Use of Laser will be made for trench excavation if required.

• In order to attain ground stability, the trench will be sprinkled with small amount of
water so the sand will not get collapse at the time of excavation.

• Excavator /JCB will be used to dig the trench, the width of the trench depends on dia.
& maximum trench width as specified in the IFC drawings. Final 1.2 - 2.0m deep trench
will be excavated to the required width with excavator/ JCB.

• Proper earth work support will be used where pipe to be laid in underground
water area.

• Earth support will be checked for Third party calculation if required.

• After excavating the required depth, the trench will be sprinkled with water
from an approved source and will be compacted with plate compactors.

• Joint Survey Inspection will be carried out along with the consultant before and
after laying of bedding material to check the required depth.

• After placing and compacting the bedding material up to the invert level, pipe will
be laid whose dia and type will be as per approved drawings. This may be
undertaken use of laser if required.

• The pipe will be laid as described in a separate method statement for pipe
laying.

• Joint survey inspection will be carried out along with consultant to check the

• alignment and depth of the pipe along with the invert level of the Manholes.

• After carrying out the respective test for the pipeline and approval from the
consultant, bedding material will be laid on top and side of the pipe as
mentioned in the approved drawings and specifications.

• The trench will be backfilled with excavated dredge sand in layers with
300mm (max) each layer, and compacted with use of Plate Compactors.
Compaction test will be taken and witnessed by consultant.

• All safety signage within the construction area will be placed at the location

• When the area will be subject to groundwater, sheet piles, dewatering pumps,
steel frames, sedimentation tanks.

• Sheet piles will be used in all excavations from 2000mm and deeper.

• Sump pit will be made towards the D/S side of the flow and de-watering will be
done as and when required to keep the area in dry condition.

• A proposed location shown in a key plan will be submitted together with the
Inspection Request (IR) to XXX of where the drainage water from the
excavation will be disposed.

• Geo-textile membrane will be provided wherever pipes are laid below ground
water level as stated in the specification.

7. HEALTH ANDSAFETY

8.1. PPE LIST

• Safety helmet
• Safety shoes
• High Visibility Vest
• Personnel to wear PPE and coveralls.
• Additional PPE such as gloves, dust masks, ear protection, safety glasses to be used.
• Gas Detectors.
• Harness &lifelines.

8. QA/QCASPECTS

• The Site Engineer / Site Supervisor are to ensure the latest approved documents, shop
drawings, method statement, material submittal etc. are being used and work will be
carried out safely.

• Work Inspection Requests to be raised not less than twenty-four (24) hours in
advance.

• Backfilling should be done in 300mm layers in all layers complying with the
specifications.

• Compaction Test to be carried out for formation layer and backfill layer.

• Bedding should be laid as mentioned in the approved drawings.

9. STORAGE AND HANDLING OF MATERIALS

• Storage of good filling materials that could be used for backfilling areas shall be stored
at approved and designated stockpile areas. In this case all excavated material is to be
used as backfilling material. Surplus material will be stored.

• Suitable and sufficient lighting is to be established
during any night works associated with the excavation/s.
• Prior to excavation works commencing a check should
be made for the presence of underground services with
the help of appropriate detecting tool and As-Built
records. If underground services are detected hand
digging should be undertaken within 0.5M of the services
• Permit to be obtained from XXX Xxx Health
&Safety Dep't &confined space permits.
• Where a person may fall two meters or more in the
excavation, barriers must be erected. However, it is still
good practice to establish barriers even for quite shallow
excavations where any person falling may come to harm. It
should be noted that barriers should also serve to keep
materials, plant and equipment away from the edges of any
excavation. Barriers may be removed to permit the access
of workers, plant, equipment etc. but should be replaced as
soon as possible.

jersey barriers/earth barriers should be used to prevent
vehicles falling into the excavation.

from revising into the excavation.

• The water table should be established prior to work. If the
existing water table is to be exposed by the excavation
careful consideration should be given as to how it may affect
the stability of the sides of any excavation. In such an event
sheet piling or preferably dewatering techniques should be
used to either cut off the water from the excavation area or
lower the level of the water table
• All soils from excavations must be located at least 2.00 m
from the edge of the excavation to prevent the sides of the
excavation being overloaded and collapsing - subject to
depth of excavation.
• Daily inspection of the excavation to be undertaken by an
experienced and competent person. Excavations must be
thoroughly examined even seven days or after any
substantial sandstorm or collapse/damage.
• To prevent collapse of the excavation, the sides shall be
battered (sloped) to a safe angle of repose; especially at
depths below 1.2 m. In a dry climate the sides of
excavations

• Identifiedinfigure1isamethodof support known as

'double sided support'. With this method
of support, the force exerted by the earth are transmitted
from one side of the excavation to the other by wailings and
horizontal struts (the forces imposed by the earth on the
supporting materials are resisted by the earth on the
opposite side of the excavation). This type of system is pre-
designed and must be installed in accordance with
manufacturer's instructions. Any method of support must be
maintained.
• As an additional control, techniques should be used to either
cut off the water from the excavation area or lower the level
of the water table
• All soils from excavations must be located at least 2.00 m
from the edge of the excavation to prevent the sides of the
excavation being overloaded and collapsing - subject to
depth.
