Method Statement for Replacing Soft Soil with Permeable Materials

1.0 Purpose of method statement

This method statement provides the details of the materials, the equipment, the procedure and
relevant documents related to the replacing soft soil with permeable material

2.0 Relevant documents and standards

2.1 Working drawings of relevant areas

2.2 ICTAD publication SCA/5 Section 304

3.0 Responsibilities for activity describe within this method statement

Construction manager, section manager, section engineer, sub grade construction engineer,
and other relevant personnel within whose scope of works shall be responsible for referred
construction activities in related replacing soft soil with permeable material shall carry out
according to the method stipulated in this statement unless otherwise changed by the
Engineer.

4.0 Detailed method of carrying out method statement activity

4.1 Materials
4.1.1 Rock fill materials, maximum size 125-500mm, free from clay and fines
4.1.2 40mm graded crushed rock aggregates for blinding

1/5
4.2 Preparation - Setting out
Once the general clearing works of the area is completed, the designated rock material
installation boundary, especially toes line of rock fill will be marked with survey instrument
with reference to the design drawings.

4.3Transport of rock material

Selected rock materials will be transported to the site by means of the dump trucks. All the
dump trucks utilizing for this purpose will be measured to get the carrying capacity, and
quantity of rock materials will be measured according to the number of trips by each
truckload and the volume will be computed accordingly. Transported rock materials will be
stacked nearby installation area.

4.4 Unsuitable excavation

Excavation will be continuously carried out until the designed or the estimated depth of the
section reached, in 30m long sections, by the time, the groundwater level shall be kept as low
as possible. Once the hard strata or the firm foundation is observed before approaching the
designed elevations, excavation operation will be ceased and further instructions from the
Engineer will be obtained.
A temporary sump will be built at the excavation area and the water pump in will be arranged
for pumping out the seeping water through the natural slope to a downstream. If a single
pump is found to be insufficient, additional pump will be will be increased as required to
lower down the water level.
The joint survey cross sections of excavation will be taken at adequate frequency of intervals
in order to determine actual excavated volume.

4.5 Rock filling

Rock fill materials will be pushed in with an excavator and spread over the area in such a
manner that the large rock will be placed and spaces will be filled with finer material to form
a dense interlocking and stable layer.

The sequence of rock filling will be as follows;

2/5
The first layer of rock fill will be spread over excavated surface. Then sufficient thickness of
40mm graded crushed rock aggregate layer will spread over first layer of rock fill. A heavy (8
ton) vibrating roller will then be introduced. After 5-6 roller passes until it gets firm
compacted surface, the second rock layer will be introduced, until it reaches 300mm above
surrounding water level. The minimum thickness of rock fill will be 500mm. Inspection
would be called from the Engineer to check the firmness of the boulder surface. Excavator
then will be moved into the next area and continue the removal of unsuitable material as well
as the filling of rock materials.

No compaction test will be carried out on rock fill layers. The maximum size of rock will be
125-500mm.

4.6 Equipment and personal

There will be a team leader in site, a technician, two surveyors and a safety supervisor.
Machinery Equipment

No. Item Capacity Number

1 Vibration Roller 8~22Ton 1

bucket0.8~1.5
2 Excavator 1
m3

3 Tipper 3-5Q 3~5

Machinery equipment will be kept in good condition and strengthen maintenance to satisfy
the construction requirement.

5.0 Quality control measures

5.1. The construction must be implemented strictly according to the drawings and
specifications.
5.2. Material shall be strictly in compliance mentioned herein the method statement and
design drawings.
3/5
5.3. The compaction of materials will be properly carried out.
5.4. The area, which is hard for roller to compact, can be manually compacted with rammer.
5.5. The Engineer’s inspection will be requested on completion of each layer.

6.0 Safety control measures

6.1. Site staffs are allowed to enter the construction site only with the safety helmets on their
heads.
6.2. Mechanization of the sub base construction is applied in this trial section. All the
equipment shall be maintained regularly.
6.3. Safety measures must be taken during the excavation close to buildings, facilities’
foundations, electricity posts and scaffolds.
6.4. To control the speed and keep the distance from other vehicles during the tipper is
running; Lighter vehicles should give way to heavier vehicles when passing each other;
6.5. It is forbidden to stand within the operating area of a running machine. All the operations
of machines shall strictly conform to the regulated process of safety operation.
6.6. When the soil structure is unstable, when the collapse happens and when the water level
rises suddenly or any other dangers occur, all the site staffs should immediately stop the work
and be evacuated to safe places. They can go back and resume the construction only after the
site is confirmed to be safe.
6.7 Temporary slope protection measurements will be taken in excavation areas.
6.8 Sufficient safety measure with barricade tapes and other relevant materials will be
arranged for ensuring the safety of children, workers and public.
6.9 Existing utilities and services will be protected during operations.
6.10 Detail map of route of material transport will be provided together with consent of local
authorities before starting work.
6.11 Allowable axel loads over the road will not be exceeded.

7.0 Environment protective measures

4/5
7.1. Wastes like the surface humus cleared from the ground and the thorns cut in the juggle
should be disposed at the specified location.
7.2. The access road should be watered timely on the fine days to avoid dust spreading.
7.3. All the equipment & machineries are forbidden to honk for the purpose of noise control.
