Theme:  Geography
Where we are located in the world, in the United States, and in
Ohio.
Standard:
5. Terms related to direction and distance, as well as symbols and
landmarks, can be used to talk about the relative location of familiar
places.
6. Models and maps represent real places.
Lesson objective:
The learner will be able to identify where they live and how it is in
relation to the world

Story/Activity: (list discussion questions, what you will do-


charting, sit in circle, etc. prior knowledge questions, name of
book and author, etc.)
Wednesday
(This lesson will be based on where we are located in the world)
To start the students will be sitting at their spots.
1. I will ask the students if they know where we live.
Responses might include
- The world
- At my house
- Toledo
- Springfield
- The United States of America
2. I will have the students move to being in a circle
- Each student will be spread out
3. I will show the students the blow up globe I have.
4. We will roll it around the class and make a group
observations about it.
Those observations could include.
- It is round.
- There are different colors.
- There are lines on the globe.
- There are names on the globe.
5. Once majority of students have made observations about the
globe, I will put a star on where we are in comparison to the
globe.
6. I will then show this video that compares Dorr Elementary to
the world

7. The students will then get the opportunity to make their own
worlds.
For this the students will make a globe out of a form ball. – the
students will use crayons to color their globes
The students will create the land and water, and then I will
create a stick of them coming out of the world, the sentence they
will create will be attached to their picture.

The students will be able to identify what the World is by the
end of this lesson.

Thursday 
(This lesson will be based on where we are located in the United
States)
Students will start the lesson on their dot spot.
1. I will have the students start the going back to what we had
talked about yesterday and how we live in the world.
2. Then I will lead the conversation about how we live in the
United States- I will start the conversation by asking the
students if they know where which country, we live in.
Answers will include.
- The United States (correct answer)
- Ohio
- Toledo
- Springfield
- The world
3. To start I will show the students a map of the United States,
I will explain that there are 50 states in the United States. I
will name some of the states that might be formular to the
students like Ohio, Michigan, New York, Florida,
California, Texas. I will point these states out on the map
that will be displayed on the smart board.
4. I will then have the students sit in a circle. Each student
will be spread out.
5. As a class we will build the United States by using a
puzzle.
- Each student will get the chance (if they want) to put a
piece of the puzzle to build the United States.
6. Once the whole puzzle is complete, I will point out to the
students that we live in Ohio. I will point out Ohio.
7. Following, I will have all students return to their dot spots.
This way the students will be able to see the directions that
will be given.
8. The students will be shown the assignment which includes,
- Students will return to their seats, and using watercolors
will paint the map of the United States. They will then
write a sentence to go along with the activity and or the
painting they made.
Sentences could include
- I live in the United States
- I made the United States
- The map is the USA and Ohio

The students will be able to identify what the United States is by


the end of this lesson.

Friday 
Students will start the lesson on their dot spot. 
1. I will start this lesson by asking the students if they can
recall where we will.
Answers will include
- Ohio
- Springfield
- Toledo
- The United States
- The world
2. I will ask the students if they remember what state we live
in which is Ohio.
3. Then I will ask the students if they know what city we live
in. (these answers could vary based on where the students
live)
4. On a piece of paper I will have pictures cut out of all the
places that we are
- The world
- The united states
- Ohio
- Springfield
- Dorr Elementary
One a piece of large paper I will have written out
My World
My Country
My State
My City
My School
5. I will call students up to put the pictures in the correct
place.
(I will have enough pictures for everyone to put on the
board)
6. Once every student has put a picture on the board we will
talk about how the place we live is the world, then the
United States, then Ohio and then Springfield.
7. Finally, the students will create their own ring of where
they are.
For this assignment the students will draw their own world,
country, state, city and school. They can use the pictures on
the board for reference. On the back they will write a
sentence about where they are.
Sentences could include.
- I am at school and in Ohio.
- I like my home and school.
- Ohio is my state.

The students will be able to identify where they are located by


the end of this lesson.

Differentiation: (how will you differentiate this lesson?) 
Depending on the lesson will depend on the different
differentiation that happens. 
Each day the students will be asked to write different sentences
to show their understanding of the topic. 
Students will be challenged to write a more advanced sentences.
Students will need to have correct spacing, capital and lower
case and a period for the assignment to be stamped and put in
mailbox.
Each student will get an opportunity on every lesson to
participate in the group instruction.
