World Music Project

Project: Research a genre of world music and compose a piece of your own in that style.

***World music is popular music that is based on musical traditions from different parts of
the world. It is often associated with cultural and social events, gatherings, festivals and
belief systems.

Part 1: Research a world musician or musical tradition and in Powerpoint format, create
slides that showcase (a total of five slides – they are numbered below.

1. The artist and / or the musical tradition (5 pts)

2. Unique qualities to this musical tradition (5 pts)
3. A deconstruction of a piece of music from this tradition (5 pts)

Part 2: Create your own piece of World Music, inspired by a world musical artist or
tradition. The music you create can be an example of fusion or it can remain true to the
classical tradition.

o Must include originally composed tracks (5 pts)

o Must be the traditional length of World Music (5 pts)
o The music should be imbedded in the PPT.
4. A blurb on how the artist inspired this piece of music or how it represents the style.
(5 pts)
5. Take a screen shot of your work as seen in a DAW. (5 pts)
