Rationale:

Student safety is of the paramount concern for any school site leader. When planning such key

measures the school leader is compelled by their duty to protect and provide for student safety at all

times period taking such measures such as conducting fire drills lockdown drills evacuation drills and

safety trainings are something that cannot be taken lightly. While it would be easy to view these

measures as simply a compliance issue, the reality is that real life incidents do occur all the time across

the country and usually we see that proper prior planning improves the outcomes of such events. With

this in mind we need to make sure that staff and students alike understand what each drill consists of

and what the intent of each drill is supposed to be. When staff and students understand not only what

they need to do but why they need to do it there is often going to be more buy in for such drills.

Many of these drills are inconvenient to teachers and disrupt their teaching practices, however

when they are properly planned ahead and teachers are notified of when to expect such drills they are

able to understand and be willing to work with admin as they prepare a safe environment for all their

students and for the teachers themselves. If an event was to occur the simple fact is that all staff and all

students want to be able to go home safely. By being able to invest beforehand in how to mitigate the

dangers and risks of each of these scenarios we are able to truly say that we care for student and staff

safety.

Are schools vision and mission always revolves around student safety and by adhering and

properly planning out these drills we are ensuring that we are doing our part in taking care of the whole

student not just their academic needs. Furthermore we comply with local and federal regulations and

avoid unnecessary legal exposure to the school district and ourselves.
