Fabrics Information

- If you want something a bit more waterproof, use an old plastic shower curtain
and then use old button-down shirts for the lining on the inside so it is soft and
comfortable to wear.
- When using terry cloth or old towels it will be messy with the fuzzy things keep
falling out when you cut it. You can zigzag stitch or overlock the ends, so it won’t
fray. The fabric gets a little bulky when sewing two seams together.
- Using rice bags for the bucket hat was more difficult to sew. It looks cool but is
not flexible.

Bucket Hat Instructions: Pattern Preparation & Sewing

PART A: [Print, tape, and cut Instructions for Face Section]

1. After pattern is printed out, tape the split side bucket hat piece and the split
brim hat pattern piece together so the pieces are lined up. You can print each
pattern pieces two times if you plan to make a lining for your hat. So the top
bucket hat piece can be printed out twice, the side bucket hat piece and brim
bucket hat can be printed out four times.
2. Cut on the outside dotted lines of the top bucket hat, side bucket hat, and
brim bucket hat patterns. You have the option to cut two of each pattern if
you are making a lining. So, there can be two top bucket hat pieces, one for
self fabric and one for lining and two pieces would be cut from the self
fabric and two pieces would be for the lining fabric for the side bucket hat
pattern and for the brim bucket hat piece. If you are not doing lining, then
one top bucket hat piece should be cut, you should have two side bucket hat
pieces, and two brim bucket hat pieces.
3. Optional: If using regular fabric like a woven buttoned up shirt material or a
knitted fabric like the ones used for tshirts, you can trim the lining pattern
paper piece by a 1/8th of an inch all around the patterns.
Note: For the plastic shower curtain bucket hat, I did not trim the lining a
1/8th for the woven shirting fabric I used for lining. The lining fabric turned
out fine with the plastic shower curtain material without trimming it.

PART B: [Instructions for cutting fabric and sewing bucket hat]

1. Place the pattern pieces on your fabric. Cut one self for the top bucket hat,
two self for the side bucket hat, and two self for the brim bucket hat piece.
There should be double if doing lining.
2. Take both side bucket hat pieces and sew the side seams together ¼ of an
inch from the edge of the fabric. There is a ¼ seam allowance all around all
the pattern pieces.
3. Next, sew both brim bucket hat pieces side seams together ¼ from the edge
as well.
4. After that, sew the top bucket hat piece to the top of the side bucket hat piece
¼ inch around.
5. Then line up the bottom of the side bucket hat piece to the top of the brim
bucket hat piece and sew ¼ around.
6. Now finish the bottom edge of the brim bucket hat pattern by doing a zigzag
stitch or overlocking it. You can add bias binding for the edge instead of
overlocking, for a more clean look.
7. Depending on the fabric used, stitch about 7 lines on the brim starting from a
¼” from the edge and keeping each stitch line ¼” apart. If using an old towel,
you do not need to add the stitch lines on the brim.
8. For those adding lining: Repeat steps 2-5 for the lining pieces.
9. Make sure you put the self fabric and lining fabric face sides together, which
is the outside of the fabric. You do not want the inside of the fabrics with the
exposed seams facing together. Line up the brim bucket hat bottom seams
and sew ¼ around. Leave about a 1 ½” – 3” opening so you can flip the hat
face side out.
10. Once you flip it out, carefully pin the opening together while keeping the
seam of it ¼”. Hand stitch the opening closed using a whip stitch or an
invisible stitch.
11. Stitch about 7 lines on the brim ¼” apart. Then you’re done. If using terry
cloth, you do not need to stitch the lines around on the brim.
