NUCLEIC ACIDS

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify nucleic acid as one of the
biological molecules in life.
2. Categorize the biological molecule nucleic
acid according to their structure, and
functions.
3. Differentiate RNA from DNA.
4. Develop understanding on the importance
of nucleic acids.
Nucleic Acids
- The physical carrier of of inheritance
that is passed from parents to
offspring.
Functions of Nucleic Acids
1. Storage of genetic information
2. Protein synthesis for transmit and
express of genetic information
Types of Nucleic Acids
1. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
2. Ribonucleic acid (RNA)
Basic
DNA
NUCLEOTIDE - building
RNA blocks
NUCLEOTIDE
- Made up of a five-carbon sugar,
phosphate group, nitrogenous base.

Nitrogenous base - made up of

purines and pyrimidines.
Nitrogenous Bases
PURINES PYRIMIDINES
● Guanine (G) ● Cytosine (C)
● Adenine (A) ● Uracil (U)
● Thymine (T)
The structure of
DNA as a
double-stranded
helix molecule was
first described by
James Watson and
Francis Crick in
1953.
Uracil (U) is one of the
four nucleotide bases in
RNA, with the other three
being adenine (A),
cytosine (C) and guanine
(G). In RNA, uracil pairs
with adenine. In a DNA
molecule, the nucleotide
thymine (T) is used in
place of uracil.
Forensic Laboratory Scientist
- Facilitates crime investigation
and uncovers details or pieces
of evidence related to criminal,
civil or regulatory cases.
- Rely on scientific investigation
helping the judicial system
solve crimes or find solutions to
legal cases.
- Must be a graduate of forensic
science
Forensic Science
- Requires a solid
foundation in biology,
chemistry, and
physics, together with
the knowledge of
existing laws in
judicial systems.
Forensic Laboratory Scientist Salary
The average forensic scientist gross salary in
Philippines is ₱563,738 or an equivalent hourly rate of
₱271. In addition, they earn an average bonus of
₱11,838. Salary estimates based on salary survey data
collected directly from employers and anonymous
employees in Philippines. An entry level forensic
scientist (1-3 years of experience) earns an average
salary of ₱408,378. On the other end, a senior level
forensic scientist (8+ years of experience) earns an
average salary of ₱701,068.
