Last Sunday I went to the zoo to visit my aunt. Visiting aunt at the zoo?
Yes, because my aunt is a zoo keeper in the cub section. She takes care of young baby animals. After
I arrived there, I walked to the cubs section. I saw three tiger cubs and a lion cub. One of the tiger
cubs was albino whose fur was white. They looked cute and very playful.
I changed my cloth and put on special gloves before I entered the big cage. There was Pak
Tono, another zoo keeper who also accompanied and protected me from the cubs, because they love
biting when playing. My aunt told me, they like biting because their teeth were still at the growing
stage, so it’s itchy. I was not afraid though because it was my third visit.
When they saw me, they ran approaching me and tried to climb my legs. We played “run and
chase”. When we wanted to leave, the albino cub followed me and grabbed my left leg. Probably it

The following text is for question 28-33.

Disasters in Java Caused by Poor Spatial Planning

TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) assessed that disasters
occurring on Java Island were attributable to poor spatial planning. Consequently, Java contributed
to the highest number of catastrophies in the archipelago.

Many areas on the island that should be water catchment areas have changed functions. “There is a
function shift of protected areas to commercial use, whether for industry, offices, educational
centers, or others. We call it spatial planning mismanagement,” said Walhi’s campaigner Abdul
Ghofar in Semarang, Monday, January 23, 2023.

He noted that in the last four years, Java has become the epicenter of disasters in the country. In
2019, 2,351 disasters occurred, or 61 percent of the total national disasters. In 2020, there were
2,368 disasters, or 50.9 percent of the national disasters. In 2021, there were 2,511 disasters or 46.3
percent of the national disasters. In 2022, there were 1,839 disasters, or 51.8 percent of the national
disasters.

“There are three provinces which over the past four years have become the three top biggest
contributors to disasters in Indonesia. They are West Java, Central Java, and East Java,” he said.

The massive conversion of land functions in Java has also been triggered by a large number of
developments, both by government and private parties, including the national strategic project
(PSN). “Java Island has 83 PSN, or 33 percent of the total PSN, with an investment value of Rp1,923
trillion,” Abdul disclosed.

The high number of infrastructure development is also eased by licensing without adequate
environmental standards. After the Government Regulation in Lieu of Law or Perpu on Job Creation
Perpu and the Environment Minister’s Regulation on the exception of the environmental impact
analysis (Amdal) obligation were issued, the licensing process for spatial planning was relaxed.

Meanwhile, no big cities in Java have fulfilled the obligation of green open spaces. “None of the big
cities in Java have fulfilled the spatial planning law, namely 30 percent areas allocated for green
open spaces,” Abdul underlined.
Walhi Central Java Executive Director Fahmi Bastian cited an example of mismanagement of spatial
planning in Semarang. According to him, disasters often occurred in the city because the upper area
which should function as a water catchment have turned into industrial and residential areas.

An ambulance dispatcher will run the London marathon in memory of his stepmother who died
after being diagnosed with 14 brain tumours in 18 months. Jenny Weller, a personal trainer from Burgess
Hill, was just 37 when she died.

Paul Weller, also from Burgess Hill, hopes to raise money for research into brain tumours.
The marathon will be held in April - almost a year after Ms Weller's death.

In 2020, a few days after having a seizure, Ms Weller discovered she had five brain tumours, in addition to
tumours in her lung, neck and pelvis. Despite extensive medical treatment including a craniotomy and
radiotherapy, her health deteriorated after she discovered she had developed a further nine brain tumours.
Prior to her death, she raised over £26,000 for the Brain Tumour Research.

Paul Weller, 37, said knowing his stepmother is somewhere supporting him will help him get through the
race. Her stepson, who is running the marathon for the same charity, said it seems "a small thing"
compared to everything she did in her last year. "She didn't give up, so I know I can't either," he added.
Mr Weller previously ran the London Marathon in 2021 when Ms Weller came to support him, and stood
near the finish line at London Bridge.
He said: "Running to those points will be emotional and, by the time the marathon comes along, we'll be
approaching the first anniversary of her death, so it will feel quite raw."

Carol Robertson, from Brain Tumour Research, said brain tumours kill more children and adults under 40
than any other cancer, however it accounts for just 1% of funds spent on cancer research in the UK.

disease," she added.

The following text is for question 39 and 40

Mangrove
A mangrove is a tropical marine tree or shrub of the genus Rhizhopora. Mangroves have special
aerial roots and salt-littering tap roots that enable them to thrive in brackish water (brackish water
is salty, but not as salty as sea water).
There are several species of mangrove trees found all over the world. Some prefer more salinity,
while others like to be very close to a large fresh water source (such as a river). Some prefer areas
that are sheltered from waves. Some species have their roots covered with sea water every day
during high tide. Other species grow on dry land, but are still part of the ecosystem.
Mangroves need to keep their trunk and leaves above the surface of the water. Yet they also need to
be firmly attached to the ground so they are not moved by waves. There are three types of
mangrove roots that play an important role for it:
(1) support roots which directly pierce the soil.
(2) level-growing roots which twist upwards and downwards, either the upward twists emerging
on the water surface.
(3) level-growing roots whose downward twist (sub-roots) appear on the water surface.
Any part of a root that appears above the water flows oxygen to the plant under water surface. As
the soil begins to build up, these roots produce additional roots that become embedded in the soil.

39. We know from the text that ….

A. Mangrove grow on totally dry land
B. Mangrove grow anywhere on tropical territory
C. There are many species of mangrove
D. Mangrove’s roots play very important roles
E. All mangrove roots are attached firmly to the ground

40. Mangrove tree can grow in dry land in condition that ….

A. The dry land is part of marine ecosystem
B. The dry land is fertile enough
C. There is sufficient salt
D. It grows near the water
E. It can get enough water.
