Energy efficient production of

bulky high yield pulp grades

Valmet HT-CTMP

Valmet HT-CTMP (High Temperature - Chemi-ThermoMechanical Pulp) allows

production in the full range from traditional CTMP to high bulky HT-CTMP pulp.

Benefits

• Reduced raw material

consumption
• Lower energy consumption
• Very low shive content
• Bulk is greatly increased
• More uniform quality

More intact fibers and very low shive to produce pulp. The HT-CTMP process uses higher
content temperatures of 150 to 180 °C during this stage. This
softens the lignin even more, allowing the fibers to

of the pulp is slightly reduced, but the bulk is greatly

Process description
HT-CTMP technology consists of Valmet’s plug screw
feeder, in which wood chips are optimally compressed
before they expand in the pressurized top impregna-
Clean wood chips tor. The chips can then absorb the impregnation
chemicals rapidly and efficiently as they pass through
the liquid while being transported upstream. The
chips are fed into a pressurized preheater, in which the
chemicals and higher temperature soften the lignin
they contain. The chips then continue to the pres-

surized refiner via the preheater’s plug screw feeder,
where some of the liquid is retrieved for recycling.

The Stora Enso Fors board mill in Sweden

The new HT-CTMP birch pulp now being produced
has greater bulk, which means the board can be
produced at lighter weights and with improved
properties. Energy consumption has been reduced.

has resulted in it operating more stably, and the pulp

being more uniform in quality.

“We’ve had a good working relationship with Valmet

throughout the project. Together, we’ve planned and built a
plant that meets the project’s expectations,” say Jan Pettersson,
Production Engineer, and Stefan Neijman, Project Manager,
at the Stora Enso Fors Mill.
