REFLECTION 1

DIRECTIONS:

Looking at the United Nations and ASEAN as global and regional organizations, do you think the world
needs this kind of system? Defend your answer.

Globalization is an established part of the modern world, so most of us do not realize the benefits it
brings to our everyday lives—such as easy access to a variety of different cuisines or new technologies
developed by countries half a world away.

Governments, associations, societies, and groups form regional organizations and/or networks as a
way of coping with the challenges of globalization. Globalization has made people aware of the world in
general, but it has also made Filipinos more cognizant of specific areas such as Southeast Asia. The
United Nations and other international institutions have made the world into an "internationalized"
system. Regionalism makes it possible for a more dynamic range of cooperation. Including the five (5)
active principal organs such as the General Assembly (GA), which is the UN's main deliberative
policymaking and representative organ. The Security Council (SC) is the new organization that recognizes
great power prerogatives in the Security Council and so the decisions of the Council are binding. The
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) coordinates the economic and social work of the United Nations
and the UN system. It also maintains a vital link between the United Nations and civil society. The
International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the main judicial organ of the UN. It consists of 15 judges elected
jointly by the General Assembly and the Security Council. And the Secretariat is the main administrative
"engine" of the United Nations and employs some 40,000 people around the world. The Secretary-
General is the figurehead of the entire organization. He or she is empowered to become involved in a
wide range of areas that can be interpreted as threats to peace. On the other hand, the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations, also known as ASEAN, aims to accelerate the economic growth, social progress,
and cultural development in the region and to promote regional peace and stability through abiding
respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries of the region and adherence
to the principles of the United Nations Charter.

So, I believe that there is really a need for these organizations to exist because they play a crucial role
in maintaining the life we are experiencing now; building strong and good connections with some other
countries to prevent war; and knowing how to cope and resolve some issues. With that, we will have a
progressive and peaceful society.
