b)Research and development

Research and development (R&D) is a general term for all those investigative activities that
an educational institute conducts with the intention of making a discovery that can either
lead to the development of new educational products (e.g. curricula, learning materials) or
procedures (e.g. teaching or assessment procedures), or to improvement of existing
educational products or procedures.
Research and development is a key element for the success of any educational institute. R
& D involves two major types of research by purpose. It combines systematically both
basic and applied research, and aims at discovering solutions to problems or creating new
educational products. It involves researching the market and the learners’ needs and
developing new and improved products and services to fit these needs.
Like any other business, organization or field of life, Education is also facing many
challenges in this rapid changing era. To cope with the challenges, development in the field
of education is a must, which can be brought best through research. Research and
Development activities can help to evolve existing curricula, learning materials, teaching
methodologies and techniques, and current assessment systems. So, research through
development leads to innovation.
The R&D may take months or years to yield useful products. Universities utilize this
process for new product development and innovation. Though each college or university
may have its own unique research methodology, a general research process will form the
framework for it.

and expenses, finance department responsibilities also include economic analysis to
improve key business strategies.

A company's finance department serves a fundamental role in making financial

decisions for internal and external affairs. A business’s activities depend on the
competence of a company’s finance department and the individuals who comprise
it. A finance department is organized by, and runs according to, specific roles and
duties.

Depending on a company's activities and your skill set, you can work in any of the

d) Marketing department

Most organizations function by dividing responsibilities between different

departments. This allows professionals who specialize in a particular field to focus
on that area and may help the company efficiently balance responsibilities between
the different departments. One vital branch of most organizations is the marketing
department. In this article, we discuss the importance of a marketing department
and list 11 essential roles that they may perform for a company.

Marketing departments are often responsible for a wide variety of business and
marketing tasks. This team plans, creates and distributes the promotion for an
organization. They may also take on other business and image-related
responsibilities. To function in the most efficient manner possible, marketing teams
may divide their responsibilities into different positions. Each of these individuals
helps the marketing department to perform well and therefore plays an important
role in the overall function of the organization. A few different positions that may
make up a marketing department include:

 Chief marketing officer:  This position, also known as CMO, oversees all
other marketing personnel and helps drive all brand and promotion
strategies.
 Vice president of marketing:  The VP of marketing supports the CMO's
efforts to oversee the branding and marketing efforts and strategy of the
company overall.
 Director of marketing:  This individual works to develop and manage new
projects, from research and development to completion. This may involve

e) Production department

The production department in a business organization is that department

which engages in the manufacturing or production of goods for the business
organization. The production department is headed by the production
manager. Other workers in this department include technicians, engineers,
designers, machine operators etc.

There are so many functions of the production department. Below are some
of the most common functions of this department:

 The production department manufactures goods for the business

which are then sold in order to bring revenue for the business.
 The production department is also responsible for the designing of
the goods or products of the business which are sold to other
businesses or to the general public.
 Every aspect of production is controlled by the production
department. By controlling production, the department efficiently
uses things such as labor, machines and materials judiciously in
order to prevent any wastage.
 The department improves on the products of the business by
bringing changes and innovations.
 The production department makes sure that it produces goods or
products at very low costs in order to maximize profit.
 The production department works in collaboration with the
purchasing department of the company in order to make sure that
materials needed for production are always available.
 The department also makes sure that the machines and equipments
used in production are serviced and properly maintained all the
time.

These are just some of the common duties or functions of a production

department in a company.

h) MIS/IT

Management Information System, commonly referred to as MIS is a phrase

consisting of three words: management, information and systems. Looking at
these three words, it’s easy to define Management Information Systems as
systems that provide information to management.
That is the simple definition of MIS that generally sums up what a Management
Information System is, and what it should do. However, its role and impact on
the smooth operation of a company can never be overemphasized. That is the
reason why every successful company makes use of these systems in one way or
another.
The reason why Management Information Systems are very important in the day to
day operation of companies is because these systems work with people,
organizations, technology and relationships among the people and organizations
affecting the company.

This means that when properly implemented, Management Information Systems will
help achieve a high level of efficiency in a company’s management operations.

There are many benefits that come with applying Management Information Systems.
Some of these benefits help make work easier for management while the rest of
them help the organization as a whole.

Let’s take a closer look and see what you stand to gain from having a MIS.

 All stakeholders in the company have access to one single database

that holds all the data that will be needed in day to day operations. If the
MIS is used for project management, the contractor, client and consultant will
be able to achieve a high level of transparency hence it will be easy to
develop trust. Operations will also be smoother because information will
always be readily available and data collection methods like forms or
questionnaires will be standardized.

 Employees and other stakeholders in the organization will be able to

spend more time doing productive tasks. This is because a big chunk of
their time is saved thanks to the more efficient information system. This time
would have otherwise been spent setting up or retrieving traditional
information recording systems such as forms and files. As a result, the
company is able to save on manpower costs, while at the same time
producing more output in a fixed time span will now be spent productively .

 Another benefit of Management Information Systems is that they bring

the power of data processing tools that help significantly improve the
quality of decisions made in the company. A majority of Management
Information Systems have built-in data processing tools that are able to draw
conclusions based on the inputs received from the different sources. This
helps make better plans for material management, manpower allocation and
even the overall execution of the project.

 Owing to the flexibility that is brought by the use of mobile devices such
as tablet computers and smartphones, Management Information
Systems ensure that employees have easier and closer interaction with
information about the progress of any process within the organization.
This also ensures a higher degree of accuracy in data collection since it will
be possible to record the progress in smaller milestones throughout the day
on mobile devices as opposed to recording once at the end of the day. As a
result, management is able to get a better idea of the progress due to the
availability of the latest information.

 Inputs and modifications in these systems are logged and the authors
noted. The time when the change has been made is also recorded for future
reference. This means that the company is able to achieve a higher degree of
accountability since all the actions can always be tracked back to the
particular individuals who initiated them. This also means that the best
performing employees can also be easily identified since information such as
production numbers per shift and sales reports are always available and well
presented in the system.

 Management Information Systems help reduce the amount of

paperwork that departments have to deal with thanks to the central database
that’s accessible from the company network. This means that in addition to
making processes simpler and faster, the company is able to go paperless
while at the same time reducing its carbon footprint. The bills also go down
since the need for items like plain papers, ink and toner cartridges will be
reduced significantly. Transportation costs are also reduced since there will
be no need for shipping documents back and forth for approval and
signatures. Shelf space will be saved and used for other tasks. Company
wastes will also be reduced when the company goes paperless.

 Reports make it easy for companies to easily identify their strengths

and weaknesses in carrying out various tasks. Management Information
Systems provide revenue reports, performance reports for employees,
expenses tracking reports and many others. When companies use these
reports, they are able to improve their operations.

 From a top executive perspective, Management Information Systems

help give an overall impression of where the company stands
financially. These systems can also give overall status reports for specific
projects within the organization. This enables top executives and managers to
easily tell if the company is on track towards achieving its goals.

 Most Management Information Systems provide a channel for

customers to collect and store vital data and feedback from
customers. With this data, companies can easily adjust their products and
marketing campaigns to better suit the needs of the customers hence
improving on sales.

 With management information systems, a company gains competitive

advantage. This is because operations are faster and smoother and thus
results are achieved faster and more efficiently. Customers will be happy with
the service delivery because they will be getting the answers that they seek
faster and employees will be motivated because most of the tasks will
become easier with better access to data.

 MIS helps eliminate redundant roles. When information is stored efficiently,

it’s possible to identify parts of a system that are unnecessary. This means
that any efforts that were duplicated are eliminated hence the company is
able to better use the available resources.

Learning Experience and Conclusion

1. How to talk to new people

The first major lesson i learned in sales is how to overcome the fear of talking to
new people.

Meeting new people becomes easier the more you do it - and in sales you do it a
lot! Becoming comfortable with conversation will open doors for you.

Interacting with people daily makes you realize how valuable relationships are. The
larger your network is, the easier it will be for you to make new connections.

i have the skills to develop a professional and personal network that pays dividends.
CBS news agrees, your network is the most valuable asset for a successful career.

Developing networking and strong interpersonal skills early helps you get ahead in
every area of life.

2.  Work smarter not harder

Although hard work is extremely important, keep this phrase in mind: work smarter
not harder.

One of the best things you will learn from sales is that there are a lot of different
resources and apps that can make your life easier. Every day we have access to
more technological resources to help optimize our lives and give us more time.

By delegating your busy work to an app, you’ll be able to put your focus on what
really matters: closing more deals. As a salesperson, apps that save you time can
optimize each part of your daily routine such as lead generation tools, route
optimization, CRM tools, and even organization apps.

Badger Maps is a great example of a tool that will save you time by helping
you optimize your daily routes and streamline every aspect of your job, from
planning, to following up and capturing customer info. Let Badger Maps take
care of all the busy work, while you take care of closing more deals.
3. How to deal with rejection
Whether you're in sales or not, you'll face a lot of rejection in life.

Losing an opportunity never feels good, but sales can help you handle it
like a pro.

You'll talk to a lot of people who tell you “no”, so you learn not to take it
personally. You have to realize that when someone says “no”, they
aren't saying no to you - they're saying no to the idea. Letting things
go and learning how to overcome sales objections will give you the
psychological skills to persevere in any situation in life.

Having a thick skin and dealing with rejection in a healthy way is a

great life skill to learn from sales. Everyone you'll meet will have a bad
day now and then. Shrugging off a rude response helps you stay
focused on your overall goals.

At the end of the day, sales is a numbers game. You have to put
yourself out there again and again. The best way to improve is to
fail. You'll learn from your mistakes and become better.

In sales, becoming better means closing more deals. All it takes is

consistency. The best salespeople have been rejected countless times,
but they never gave up.

4. The art of persuasion (without being

annoying or pushy )
Learning how to ethically persuade people is an
investment in every area of your life. However, there is a
fine line between being pushy and persuasive.

Your prospects are typically fine without your product. But,

every product exists because it is supposed to help make
someone’s life easier or better.
The sales process is different for every industry, but learning
how to show your product’s value and allowing your
prospects to be the decision-makers helps them feel more
comfortable when buying.

Finding that perfect balance between persuading and

helping is key.

Persuasion is an art. There is an entire genre of self-help

books and helpful articles on how to be more persuasive. A job
in sales will teach you that understanding what your client
needs is the first step to persuading them.

When speaking to prospects, make sure to

be confident, knowledgeable, and polite while using logic,
truth, and positive language. They will not want to purchase
your product unless they are sure that what you have to offer
will fulfill the need they have.

5. How to listen more than you talk

Another lesson you learn in sales is how to actively listen.

Your customer should be talking more than you. When talking with
prospects, you should listen to their problems and help them find a
solution. Yes, even if it means directing them away from your
company. The prospect will appreciate the help and understand that you
have their best interest in mind.

By listening more than you talk, you learn how to ask the right
questions at the right time.

A job in sales teaches you how to ask the right questions to get your
prospect talking. By listening to them, you allow them to become
comfortable doing business with you.

People love talking about themselves - so let them talk. Take

advantage of the opportunity to listen well and build a relationship with
trust.
By listening attentively, you will also learn what someone wants
without them explicitly saying it. People often say one thing while
meaning another. They may not realize what they are really
communicating, but by listening, you will understand their real needs.
This will make you a better salesperson and friend.

Listening is a skill that many people do not take steps toward improving.
But, it is one of the best ways to build trust between people .

6. Prioritization and self-discipline

Prioritizing your time is difficult and staying on top of everything can be
challenging.

It is hard to decide what to do to maximize your efficiency on the job.

You have to take into account the level of importance and the urgency of
each task.

Your sales experience will teach you that every decision you make has
an opportunity cost to it.

With every decision being important for your productivity, organizing a

schedule may seem a little intimidating at times. However, it’s very
important to take one hour out of your day to organize and prioritize.
This can help boost your efficiency for the entire week!

Once you have your schedule set, it’s even more important to stick to
it. Being self-disciplined and following through with your
schedule is an important lesson to learn in sales. Having a good work
ethic and accomplishing your goals for the day are even more important
than making your list of priorities. It’s great to have a list- but does
it really help if it doesn’t get done?

Making the most of your time at work makes you happier and more
productive. Which in turn makes your coworkers and clients happier as
well.

Prioritizing your time by focusing on the people that actually need

your product is how great salespeople find success. There are only
24 hours in a day, and it’s impossible to speak with everyone. You must
choose what to do during those hours to find success.
Time is precious in sales, so you want to optimize it as much as you can
to be as productive as possible. Learning to delegate some of the
busy work to apps can help you be more productive. Less time
doing administrative work means more time to sell and close deals.

Conclusion
Overall, I learned many life lessons from a job in sales since I
havd develop skills that otherwise do not get much attention.

Sales prepares me for many challenges you'll face in life such as

facing rejection, increasing productivity, or being more open-minded
and curious.

It is also a great way to start your career. It forces you to improve

some difficult-to-learn skills, and it forces you to step outside of my
comfort zone. Those are the first steps to set myself up for success
