1. Let A = {2, 3, 4, 5}, B = {2, 4, 6, 8}, C = {3, 4, 5, 6} and let U = {0, 1, 2, · · · , 10} be the universal set.
Verify
(a) the associative laws:

A ∩ (B ∩ C) = (A ∩ B) ∩ C and A ∪ (B ∪ C) = (A ∪ B) ∪ C.

(b) the distributive laws:

A ∩ (B ∪ C) = (A ∩ B) ∪ (A ∩ C) and A ∪ (B ∩ C) = (A ∪ B) ∩ (A ∪ C)

(c) the De Morgan’s laws:


(A ∪ B)′ = A′ ∩ B ′ and (A ∩ B)′ = A′ ∪ B ′
2. (a) Let X = (−10, 10) be the universal set and A = (−2, 6), B = [−5, 3] and C = [−1, 8). Find each of
the following sets and display it on the number line.
i. A′ ii. X − A iii. (A ∩ C)′ iv. (B − A) ∩ C

v. A ∩ (B − C) vi. (X − C) ∩ (A − B)
(b) Given that R, is the set of real numbers is the universal set, A = (−8, 6] and B = [5, ∞), find

3. Given that X and Y are sets, simplify as far as possible each of the following:

(a) Determine which ones are commutative and/or associative.
