Experiential Learning Course 102:

Participation and Teaching Assistantship

Learning Outcomes:
- Cite personal qualities of an effective teacher.
- State the professional competencies expected of a teacher.

I. Task Background

1. Review the qualities of good teachers found in the Philippine Professional

Standards for Teachers (PPST) and the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency
Framework and the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.
2. View on YouTube 2 TEDx Talks on “What makes a good teacher great” and “The
Power of a Teacher”.
3. Review the Career Stages of Teachers based from the DepEd Order No. 42, s.
2017.

II. Analysis

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards, Code of
Ethics for Professional Teachers and the TEDx videos you viewed, what
competencies does a great teacher possess?

- Competencies are a set of skills, knowledge, behavior, and characteristics that

allow for effective or improved job performance. A teacher, as a complex job,
employs a variety of competencies to deal with the changing educational context.
With regional integration, the challenge of ensuring that Southeast Asia's 5
million teachers have the essential competencies required for optimal
performance becomes more complex. The Southeast Asia Teachers
Competency Framework is intended to be a useful guide in improving teacher
performance throughout the region. The SEA-TCF is a development tool used to
address the changing demands of the teaching profession. The framework's
competencies should be interpreted in light of the local context and specific
requirements.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?

- I believe not. these competencies are not solely referring to teachers profesional
competencies alone which refers to their skills, capabilities, and knowledge to
execute but involves their personal competencies which talks about their
character which is reflected to the manner they teach portrayed to theid students.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess the professional competencies

to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning,
compute and report grades? Explain your answer.
- In order for a teacher to do his/her work that involves planning, executing,
managing, assessing, and learning he/she must have a good grip to his
professional competencies but that should not end there. Having these does not
equate greatness as a teacher. It should be a balance between teachers
character and intellect.

4. For a teacher to be great, which are more important – personal qualities or

professional competencies?
As what we have seen in the Ted Talk video about “What makes a good teacher
great? ” it shows the difference between the students’ perspective and how it
varies according to their needs which surprised the speaker for it was not the
description he thought would be.
I am a hard believer that the best way to teach is to let them experience, may it
be first hand or second hand. For as teachers we have to focus on the child as a
whole or holistically and letting them gather it from experiencing it, Progressivism
as what I can remember.
To answer that question, I believe that both of the competencies are equally
important but in our time today we must give more focus on our personal
qualities. To be able to see that students are trying and notice a struggle in
students. We should not make assumptions about what the students can or
cannott do. As what the speaker said, “Good teachers hear, but great teachers
listen.” And I storngly believe in that.

5. Which among the competencies you have researched is/are evident in your
cooperating teacher? How are these competencies manifested?
- According to what I have researched about teachers competencies and looking
at how my Cooperating teacher handles every class, I am very happy to be able
to see many of these characteristics which inspired me as we go along with
every class sessions.
I am currently under Ms. Ruhama Gomez, and she is a very dedicated to this
profession. Her enthusiasm and passion motivates her students to do their best
since she is not giving a mediocre service to them, which I personally think is a
good thing. There is no perfect teacher, our patience will be tested as we grow in
this profession and I see how well Ms. Ruhama handles situations and how she
is able to adapt perfectly. To be able to reach students, as teachers, we must
have a good use in the language and be able to communicate effectively. Not
only Ms. Ruhama is a fluent speaker but she knows when to speak and to listen.
I can attest that having all these competencies, we will be able to be effective
teachers and have a permanent effect to our students’ lives.
III. Reflection

1. Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement

in?

- Ever since I was young, I possess stronger grip on EQ rather than IQ. I may not
be the smartest but I have always been sensitive about how other people would
take my words or things that I impart to them. Even though this is a good quality,
I do believe that I have a lot to improve regarding my professional capabilities to
be able to be more effective.

Patience is a big part to this field so that is something I am more willing to focus
on improving in the future.

2. Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating? Why?

- I believe that I am a strong communicator and because of that I am able to
interact with people from a diverse range of cultures and backgrounds. As a
future educator, I should maximize this potential to be able to interpret and sense
problems if my students will be able to have one. Along with this skill is a
responsibility to discern and assess every situation to know where and when is
the right time to speak or reprimand. Words are very powerful and should never
be taken lightly. High school students are like sponges they absorb everything
teachers throw at them and it molds their perception and outlook in life.

3. In which competencies do I need to develop more?

- I have to work more on my organizing skills. This side of me has always been a
struggle. Now that I am near in becoming a teacher and an influence, I hope that
I will be able to properly organize not just my materials but my elf as well. I do
believe that not preparing for tomorrow is preparing for failure. So that is
something that I should work on.
Other than that, one important competency I should strengthen is my patience.
Since I will be teaching high school students and I was a high school student
back then, I should be more understanding and patient with how I deal different
situations in and out the classroom. I should be of good influence to students.
Teachers really do have great influence to a person’s development so we should
always try to grow and be better for our students to be challenged to evolve to be
better as well.
IV. Research!

1. In assisting your Resource Teacher, what are the personal and professional traits
that are least displayed in the class? What are the results of the minimal
manifestation of these traits?
- I am currently assigned to observe online class sessions in MSU-CETD. Based
on my own observation about my Cooperating Teacher which is Ms. Ruhama
Gomez, I can clearly see her passion in teaching as well as her approach to the
students. She is very welcoming to students’ queries and needs as well and her
warmth during sessions is very admirable.
During one of the sessions, where students were not able to answer and perform
well in a class activity, it was really disheartening as a teacher to see that. This
affected how she’s doing her class. She seemed off and it kind of scared the
students.
These types of situations affect how teachers deal with the students and how
students perform in the session. That happening does not represent the
teacher’s skills and capabilities as a whole but through that I was able to see how
a simple trait can go and affect students and their participation which could affect
them even after school.
2. What are the reasons behind the lack of these professional and personal traits?
- As what I have mentioned in the first number, it was because of lack of
enthusiasm in the part of the students which made the teacher kind off pissed for
they were not able to do their part as learners.

3. How will you address this problem? What is a possible action research that can
be done?

- Everytime we end our discussions, our Cooperating teacher would always ask us
as pre-service teachers our take outs in the sessions. Things like what have we
observed, what did we learn, and what are the things we could improve. During
that session, I was open as to what I observed and Ms. Gomez asked me if I
have a suggestion to that problem.
My first question was about the students if they are anturally competitive because
I was not able to see their competitiveness in classes. They seemed to be so
passive. I was suggesting to incorporate a more competitive environment to
them. Making more activities involving and making them count their scores to
acquire a special gift or incentive every after quarter. I thought of this to make
learning more fun and involving.
Ms. Ruhama acknowledged this suggestion and I hope that throught that I was
able to be one step closer in becoming a teacher which that set of students need.
4. What is the main objective of your action research? What are your specific
research questions? How will you answer these specific questions?

- Going into the specifics, I formulated questions like; 1. What is the nature of this
set of students? 2. How are we able to make them more engaged and involved in
lessons? 3. Will this strategy work?. These possible solutions only wants to get
the population be active in the classes so that as teachers we can assure that
they are really learning and understood the lessons clearly.
