Participate and Assist
(Note to Student Teacher: As you participate and assist your FS Resource Teacher in
her daily task, please note of what you are expected to give more attention to as
asked in the next step of this Learning Episode, NOTICE).
Participate actively by assisting your Resource Teacher in his/her daily task. Take
the initiative to offer your assistance. Don’t wait for your Resource Teacher to ask for it.

Observe
1. Take note of the following:

 Your Resource Teacher comments, facial expressions, gestures and actions in

class
 Students’ comments, facial expressions, gestures and behavior in class
 How your Resource Teacher relates to you
 The classroom proceedings
 The classroom atmosphere ─ relaxed or threatening?

Analyze
1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the
TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?
1. A great teacher eats apples. The meaning of this statement is quite hard to
define but in my own understanding, it means that a great teacher knows how
to listen to his/her students. It does not only mean that if you can hear what the
student said then, you are already a good teacher. To listen is to know and to
understand what does the student is trying to imply. You must be openly
accepted gifts and opinions from your students. Therefore, the word apple
there means building a good relationship and trust that is shared between
teachers and students.
2. A great teacher is chill. It means that a teacher can make his/her students trust
him/her through communication. Don’t make them fear you but instead you
must be calm, chill and humorous teacher. Make them feel that though you are
a teacher, they can still open up to you but in a respectful way.
3. A great teacher thinks like an adult but acts as a kid. It means that your
students wants you to think like them and so, you must put your shoes on them
to be able to know what are their feelings and to understand them as a child. As
a great teacher, you must be flexible enough to pick up on that.
4. A great teacher loves to teach and learn. It means that being a great teacher,
you must have the passion and eagerness to teach because your students like to
see you learn in front of them. Bear in mind that the students will always
treasure their teacher who leads them to their journey which is their dreams
and goals in life.
5. A great teacher isn’t a teacher. It means that your role as a teacher doesn't only
stop on the classroom, but it should also goes beyond that wherein you can be
their doctor, counselor, motivator, listener and second parents as well.
6. A great teacher understands that students have also life outside the school. It
means that you must show empathy to a struggling learner. You must help your
students step up to be able to succeed in life and doesn't presume about the
abilities of what your students only have. Noticing, addressing and helping
those who have struggles in life are also one of the best competencies of a great
teacher.
7. A great teacher sings. It means that you must be humble before your students
and you must be able to take risks for your learner’s sake.

Therefore, it made me realized that being a great teacher is not just only by
profession but rather more than that. You must be a role model to your learners
because they look up to you and imitate you. It is your big and great role to bring
impact to transform their lives not just as a learner but as a person as well. And that is
what I learned from the videos I seen and the frameworks I read.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?

Of course no, because teachers are not the only one who can have the said
competencies but also other people and one of the great example is our parents. They
are the first one who became our teacher who taught us how to read and write basic
letters and words when we were young.

3. For a teacher to be great is it enough to possess the professional competencies

to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute
and report grades? Explain your answer.
No, because being a great teacher, what more important is you have a good
character and personality traits towards your students in a way that it can build
positive relationship for a better teaching-learning process. Aside of having a strong
and efficient professional skill, this kind of behavior can also bring good impact on the
personality and academic development of the students which can change their lives.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important ─ personal qualities or

professional competencies?
For a teacher to be great, I prefer that personal qualities are more important
because it influenced personal attributes which enable them to build new
students. Being a good listener is a quite hard yet very crucial quality of a teacher
because they can only encourage and help their students on their improvements if
they have a solid understanding of who they are and where they are in their academic
path. It’s very hard to pay attention to what the students are interested in just to
delivered the lessons to their specific interests and explain to them on how they
interact with other students and in the classroom. Therefore, personal qualities must
come first because it is one of the most important images of being a great teacher.

5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?

The teachers that we remember the most are those teachers that are kind,
approachable, and understanding wherein we never become hesitant to freely ask
questions or express our ideas and participate in every activity they have prepared for
us. They are the teacher who keeps motivating and encouraging us when we have
personal problems and when our academic status is not in good state. They treated us
as their own children and likewise, we treated them as our second parents. Another
thing that we remember the most are those teachers who are good communicator,
very creative in delivering their lessons, and those who give interactive activities just
to be able to make the class meaningful and lively.
Reflect
o Which personal traits do I possess? Not possess? Where do I need improvement
in?
The personal traits that I possess are being an approachable, long patience,
understanding and humorous. On the other hand, the thing that I didn't possess is
having a strong communication skill and I think this one needs an improvement.
Communication is definitely hard for me to achieve because I'm not really good in
expressing my ideas and perspectives most especially if I am using English language
as a medium of communication orally. I'm quite conscious about my grammar and
pronunciation. So I prefer to write it down because that is my comfortable zone.
However, as a future teacher, I need to overcome and develop it through reading
books and constantly practice talking English orally to be able to habituate it so that
by the time that I'm a fully teacher, I know what I am saying without being so
conscious.
o Which professional competencies am I strongly capable of demonstrating?
For me, the professional competencies that I am capable of demonstrating are
planning and organizing the lesson plan because I think that is the part that I'm actually
excelling in. It is my honor and it makes me feel happy when I cater the needs of my
students and gave them the best education they deserved.
o In which competencies do I need to develop more?
I think the competencies that I need to develop more is having a good
communication skills because as I mentioned above, I'm not really good in delivering my
lessons though for it makes me feel so conscious. However, I know that I'm still in the
process of learning and just like what other people always says, "try and try until you
succeed." So, I will try my best just to overcome this concern to be able to give the best
education to my future students.
o Who are the teachers that we remember most?
We may remember all the teachers we’ve had but the teacher we remembered the
most are those who are kind, funny and passionate teacher. They make the class
meaningful, lively and engaging to the point that we no longer notice the time and the
boredom. We also remember those teachers who challenged us and made us to think. The
teacher we remember the most is the greatest tribute we can leave to those teachers.
Write Action Research Prompts
1. OBSERVE In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits such as
warmth, humor, self-control and detaching problems from her personal life and
professional competencies like inclusiveness, creativity in delivering the lessons and
activities and time management were least/not displayed and as a result, students
were/was not able to concentrate to the lessons properly and it hinders their
learning for their attention were diverted. Thus, having the right mindset about
your role, purpose, and impact on others is prerequisite to become an effective
teacher to be able to achieve successful teaching process.

2. REFLECT The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies

(mentioned in #1) may be caused by her personal problems and struggles in life
which reflect on the lack of her preparedness and teaching styles. As a teacher, she
should separate her personal problems and struggles because this could be the
reason why she can't deliver her lessons clearly and effectively. The learning needs
of her students are no longer cater and meet because instead of thinking and
planning those teaching styles, her attention was more focus on her personal
dilemma which could affect the learning of her students.

3. PLAN I would like to address this problem (mentioned in #2) by conducting an

action reseach on "Factors Affecting Teacher's Poor Teaching Competence towards
Student's Academic Achievement."

4. ACT
a. The main objective of my action research is to identify the factors that affect the
teacher’s poor teaching competence and how it would affect to the academic
achievements of the students.

b. My specific reseach questions are:

 What are the problems and issues that a teacher face?
 What are the influential factors that lead to the poor competency of the
teachers?
 How teacher’s poor teaching competence can affect the academic
achievements of the students?

c. To answer my specific reseach questions, I will conduct a qualitative action

research.

Attach your reflections here.

Teachers have the very important responsibility of shaping the lives of young
children. With this responsibility, it comes with great love, patience, passion and joy. Thus,
all teachers should strive for what can be considered to be a good teacher.

Being a great teacher is someone who identifies his or her own personal traits and
competencies because it will create a healthy rapport with his or her students based on
respect and trust as well as the students may also feel comfortable to approach or interact
to him or her without having fear. Teachers should put their hearts into teaching because
the students may feel their passion and hard work. When a teacher strives hard for the
students, students will put in their efforts as well. If a teacher dislikes his or her job, goes to
classes in a bad mood, his or her teaching would also be affected and students would not be
able to enjoy lessons as well. Competency of a teacher is also important for the process of
student's well development in ensuring quality learning. It will give positive effects on the
academic development and skills of the students and help them to improve their teaching
techniques.

Through this observation, it makes me ponder on how to become a great and

effective teacher. Those personal traits and professional competencies that I have learned
help me to become ready in my future career on how to handle diverse students. As a
future teacher, all the learnings I gained from this episode are the stepping stone to my
success so that I can use and apply it when the right time comes.
