Spark Plug

Function :
Spark Plug is a used to produce
electric spark to ignite the
compressed air fuel mixture inside the
combustion chamber at the designed
ignition timing.

• When the engine operates, the

high voltage current produced
by H.T. Coil jumps across the
electrode gap and creates spark that
ignites air fuel mixture. The H.T. Coil
receives current from the magneto .
• The spark plug is inserted into
the cylinder head in such a
way that its electrodes project in
the combustion chamber.

Construction :
A spark plug consists of mainly three
parts
1. Center electrode or insulated
electrode.
2. Ground electrode or outer electrode.
3. Insulator separating two electrode.

Working principle :
As the current flows from the HT coil,
a voltage develops between the
central and ground electrodes. But as
the gap between the central and
ground electrodes are filled with
insulating fuel and air mixture, no
current can flow.
However, as the voltage rises &
exceeds the dielectric strength of
the gase, the gase becomes ionized.
The ionized gas becomes a conductor
and allows electrons to flow across the
gap.
