Learning outcomes:
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:
1. Explain the concepts, components and indicators, of food and nutrition security at
various levels.
2. Discuss the food security situation in Kenya, Africa and globally.
3. Describe the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of nutrition intervention
programmes.
4. Explain the formulation and application of nutrition policies.
Course description:
Components of food and nutrition security. Household, regional and national food and nutrition
security. Indicators for food security and determination of food security status. Factors affecting
food and nutrition security. National and global food reserves. Food and nutrition programmes;
Examples including national school feeding, famine relief. National food and nutrition policies:
policy components, formulation and application.
Teaching Methodologies:
Lectures, discussions, invited speakers.

Continuous assessment tests, practicals, assignments, ( 30%) end of semester examinations
(70%).
