Assignment 2

(Problems should be worked by October 20th 2016)

1. In the following Mechanical system.

a. Assign all forces,
b. Draw the free body diagram of this system,
c. Find the transfer function of this system X(s)/F(s)
d. Find the response x(t) of this system.
Before starting name all elements of the system and solve first symbolically and
finally substitute with the given values.

2. Write the equation of motions for the mechanical system shown in the Figure
below. The displacements are x1, x2 and x3. Specify the motion, assign all forces,
find the free body diagrams and finally have the transfer function X3(s)/F(s).

3. Assign all torques with its directions, Find the Free Body Diagrams and then write
the equation of motions of the rotational mechanical system shown in the Figure
below.

4. Find the transfer function X1(s)/F(s) for the translational mechanical system shown in
the Figure below.
a. Assign all forces,
b. Draw the free body diagram of this system,
c. Find the transfer function of this system X1(s)/F(s) first symbolically and then
substitute with the given values.

5. A simplified version of automobile suspension system (spring-mass-dashpot

system) is shown in the Figure below. Assume that the displacement x of point P
is the input to the system, and the vertical motion y of the body is the output. The
system is initially at rest, and the displacement y is measured from the equilibrium
position.
Assume that m = 100kg, b = 500 N-s/m, and k = 2000 N/m.
i. Assign all forces and draw the free body diagram of this system
ii. Write the equations of motion of this system,
iii. Find the natural frequency of the system and the damping ratio and show
whether the system is stable or not.
iv. Obtain the y(t) when x(t) is a unit step input.

Solve first symbolically and finally substitute with the given values.

6. Consider the mechanical system shown in Figure below, in which m = 0.5 kg, b
= 6 N-s/m, k1 = 10 N/m and k3 = 40 N/m. The displacement x is measured from
the respective equilibrium position. Assume the force u is the force input to the
system, and it is a unit ramp force.
i. Assign all forces,
ii. Draw the free body diagram of this system,
iii. Find the transfer function of this system X(s)/U(s)
iv. Find the response x(t) of this system.
v. Find the natural frequency of this system, and then state the type of its
response.
