The shipping industry has always been at the forefront of technological

advancements, seeking to improve efficiency and reduce costs. One such innovation
is the use of hybrid turbochargers on ships. Hybrid turbochargers are a type of
turbocharger that combines both a mechanical turbocharger and an electrical motor,
offering a unique solution to boost the engine's power while ensuring optimum fuel
consumption.
The working principle of a hybrid turbocharger is relatively simple. A turbocharger
is essentially a turbine that uses the exhaust gas to drive a compressor. This
compressor then forces more air into the engine, allowing for more fuel to be
burned and generating more power. However, traditional turbochargers suffer from a
"turbo lag" issue where the turbine needs to reach a minimum speed before it can
produce significant compression. This means that there is a delay between the
driver's request for power and the engine's response.
To solve this problem, hybrid turbochargers use an electrical motor to assist the
turbocharger at low speeds. The motor is powered by the ship's electrical system
and can spin the compressor to increase the amount of air entering the engine. This
means that even at low engine speeds, the engine can receive sufficient air to burn
fuel, providing a more immediate response when power is needed.
The use of an electrical motor also means that the turbocharger can be used to
harvest energy that would otherwise be lost. During engine braking, when the ship's
propeller is turned by the water, the turbocharger can continue to spin, driving
the electrical motor and generating electricity. This energy can then be used to
power other ship systems or stored in batteries for later use.
Hybrid turbochargers offer significant advantages over traditional turbochargers.
By reducing the turbo lag, ships can achieve better maneuverability, making them
safer to operate. Additionally, the use of an electrical motor means that fuel
consumption can be reduced, providing cost savings for ship owners. Furthermore,
the ability to harvest energy during engine braking means that the overall
efficiency of the ship
