A. Act out the dialogue below with a partner.

Dialogue 1:

A: Hi Kate, how are you?

B: Hi Tim, Very well, thanks. How about you?

A: Fine, thank you. would you like to go out for dinner tonight?

B: I’m sorry. I can’t come out tonight. We have a family dinner.

A: Never mind. Perhaps we can organize it some other day.

B: Absolutely.

B. Work with a partner, Write a dialogue to make and respond to an excuse. Then act
it out.

C. Put the following dialogue into the correct order (1-7) and then act out the
dialogue with a partner.
Dialogue 2:

b) _____Receiver: Hello, this is Mary Smith speaking. How can I help you?
c) _____Receiver: I’m afraid Mr. Jackson is not available at 2 p.m. How about 2.30?

change your appointment time.
e) _____Caller: That would be perfect! Can you change it to 2 p.m.?

g) _____ Caller: Hello, Mrs Smith. It’s Beth Thompson here. I just called to say that
I’m sorry I’m late for my appointment. I waited for the bus for more than 20
minutes. I’m still on the bus.

D. Role play the conversations (1-3) below:

2) Student B forgot your umbrella on the bus. Respond to his / her excuse.
Student B:
1) Student A is your close friend. S/he lost your favourite book. Respond to his / her

Student A
You want to speak to Nancy Scott. You are phoning her office.
Start the conversation:
• ask to speak to Miss Scott
• respond to the secretary’s question(s)
• leave your message: say you’re sorry, you took her mobile phone by mistake.
• end the conversation

Student B
You are Nancy Scott’s secretary. There is someone phoning her.
• take the call, introduce yourself
• ask who is speaking
• say Miss Scott isn’t in the office and take the caller’s message
• respond to the caller’s excuse and say that s/he can bring it back to the office.
