Here is the traffic report for 6.30 today.
Well, many people are now going home up Woostock Road, and so the road is very crowded.
Traffic is slow right up to the edge of the City. However, it is not a good idea to use the Ring road
instead, because a lorry is on fire on the London road, and this has blocked all traffic going west to
the ring road. Instead you should go to the Plain roundabout. Then go through Headington, because
the traffic there is very light today because of the strike at the hospital. Then you should go on to the
Ring road and drive to the east.
Work on the road is making traffic go slowly on the Banbury road near Summertown, and if
you are going to Cowley, the police say that you should wait for half an hour. A cyclist was knocked
off his bicycle on Magdalen bridge, and the road is blocked while the police find out what
happened. The roads through Rose Hill and the Pear Tree roundabout are clear, and traffic is moving
well. Remember to drive carefully, and have a safe journey home.

A career used to be understood as a single occupation that people did to earn a living.
However, in the changing world of work, nowadays people have to keep learning and be responsible
for building their future. Therefore, a career is
now considered A CAREER more than a job. Rather, it is
an ongoing pro cess of learning and
development of skills and experience. Choosing
a career path is hard – you have to consider many things. Firstly,
you should consider what you like, what is most important to you, what you are good at and who
is there to help you. For example, you may care mostly about earning as much money as possible or
you may want to experience job satisfaction, or make a difference to society. Then, you should take
into account education and learning styles. You may want to follow an academic route of high
school, then college or university.
24
Alternatively, you may opt for vocational training where you learn skills which can be applied
directly to a job. Thirdly, you should do your own research to explore possible career paths. For
instance, career paths in education include teaching, curriculum development, research or
administration. Finally, speak to people. Your parents, your teachers, and even your peers can give
you good advice.

1. A career no longer means a single job.

2. Your parents will be responsible for your job or career.
3. Before choosing a career, you have to get all necessary education and training.
4. You can choose a job based on your likes, your abilities and priorities.
5. If you follow a vocational education, you learn specific skills to do a job.
6. It is advisable to get advice before you decide on a future job.

THE CHANGING
ROLES
OF THE MODERN
Fathers used to act as the ‘breadwinner’ of their family, and as the teacher of moral and
religious values. Today, however, those roles are gradually changing.
Changes in economic roles
More and more women are going out to work and earn money. This increases the budget of
the family. Apart from that, there are various social welfare programmes which financially assist
mothers in supporting their children. Both these changes have greatly impacted the role of fathers
because they make paternal financial support less essential for many families.
Changes in caregiving roles
With the burden of financial support reduced, and with a changing concept of a father's role,
modern day fathers tend to be more involved in children's caregiving. They are now spending more
time and energy on their children.
Psychological research across families from all ethnic backgrounds suggests that the influence
of a father's love and attention is as great as that of a mother's. Fatherly love helps children develop a
sense of their place in the world, which helps their social and emotional development. Moreover,
children who receive more love from their fathers are less likely to have behavioural problems.

32
This trend is still increasing and its effects will become clearer and clearer in the future,
especially in traditionally male-dominated societies.

A. support families financially B. help mothers with domestic abuse

C. much greater than D. as important as
3. Children who get more fatherly love will________behavioural problems.
A. never have any B. have more C. have fewer D. have a lot of
4. The changing roles of the father will be seen more clearly in_________.
A. ethnic groups B. economically independent societies
C. developed countries D. traditionally male-dominated societies
5. The word ‘various’ in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to ______.
A. a few B. many C. no D. only

SOCIAL MEDIA

Some people are saying that social media is harming our lives. Twenty years ago,
people talked to each other, but now they message instead of talk. Many people worry too much
about what others think. They post photos and want everyone to like the photo and they get sad if

Maybe people should take a break from social media to live real life. It would be better for
people to like each other instead of liking online 'likes'. Also, there is a lot of fake news or posts

Music influences people in different ways or the same person differently at different
times. Music may seem to influence people differently. That is because people can react
differently to the music. We are able to apply a choosing process to the music we hear. If
someone hates jazz, then a jazz piece with a positive effect will probably not make him feel
good. A happy song might appear to make an angry person angrier, yet it is not the music
itself that is creating the anger; rather it is the positive effect of the music. The angry person
does not want to accept the song's happy feeling: it points out his already existing anger, and
makes that anger come to the surface. When a piece of music is played and we are listening to
it, our body, mind, and feelings are being affected. The musicians of ancient cultures such as
China, India, Turkey and Greece understood the effects of music. In fact, Pathagoras, in
ancient Greece, introduced a whole science that concerned them. Because the musicians of
these ancient cultures understood these effects, they created music that was positive, uplifting,
and beneficial. Once the effects of music are better understood, the next step is to gain a
better understanding of the music around us, and what effect it is actually having.
