Social Stratification

Social Stratification – geological concept of “strata” means “rock layers”. The arrangement of any social
group or society into hierarchy position that are unequal with regard to power.

Upper Class – elite families (productive successful)

Middle Class – comfortable lifestyle

Lower Class - lowest status in the society.

COMPONENTS of Social Stratification

Social Class – level or category where persons have upper, middle and lower class.

Social Status – behavior of a person who occupies a particular status.

Ex: parent,teacher,spouse,etc.

BASES of Social Stratification

Power or Authority - secure one’s ends in life event against opposition.

Property or Wealth – how much do they gain or earn. Tangible or intangible over business measures the
value of all assets of worth owned by a person.

Prestige or Evaluation – social judgement that a status or position is more prestigious and honorable
than others. Reputation or esteem associated with one’s position.
