Consumerism is a cultural model that promotes the acquisition of good,

specially the purchase of goods, as a vehicle for personal satisfaction and

economic stimulation. Apart from destroying natural resources and
polluting the environment along with our minds, consumerism leads to
global inequality, resulting in a huge gap between the rich and the poor.
The notion of hman beings as consumers first took shape before ww1 but
became a commonplace in the 1920’s. Consumption is frecuently seen as
our principal role in the world. People of course, have always consumed
the necessities of life: food, shelter, clothing, and have always had to work
to get them, but there was a little economic motive for increased
consumption before the 20th century. Modern-day consumerism emerged
in the early 1900s during the second industrial revolution. Factories
significantly increased the rates of goods production, which gave a rise to
consumerism. Stores began multiplying and increasing in size, department
stores with windows showed new products. As a result companies urged
their consumers to buy more and more, and managed to connect their
self-worth to their possessions through advertising and propaganda.

Environment

Global inequality
We all end up blaming someone else like the government or businesses,
but more than 50% of the impacts on the planet come from household
consumption. If we change our consumption habits, this would have a
drastic effect on our environment footprint as well.
