CIVE1244 Assignment 1 (Individual, 40%)

(a) Calculation of the Shrink-Swell Index, Iss

Attached below are the results of the shrink-swell testing conducted at the RMIT
Geotecnical Laboratory. The videos of the shrink-swell testing can be accessed from
CIVE1244 Canvas (Assignments -> Assignment 1 (individual) -> Shrink-swell test).
You are required to calculate the Shrink-Swell Index based on the measured data.

(b) Site Classification based on Iss and ys

A site is located within Climatic Zone 4 in Victoria. The results of the lab shrink-swell
testing are attached below. As a geotechnical engineer, you are required to calculate
the characteristic surface movement, ys and provide the site classification class to
AS2870 (2011).

(c) Stiffened raft footing design

Attached below is the ground floor plan of a two-storey articulated masonry veneer
residential building. You are required to design a stiffened raft footing using the
provisions given in AS2870. The site classification is “H1”. You are required to provide
• footing beam layout indicating grid spacing and re-entrant reinforcement (hand
drawing is ok),
• cross-section of the stiffened raft footing indicating dimensions of the slab,
internal and external/edge beams, and the steel reinforcement.
