1.0 Design Notes

1.1 Introduction:

The report describes the structural Analysis & design for main Kitchen
As per latest architectural dwgs.

In this phase of study the basic design Criteria ( Loading Materials, etc)
shall be as per the project Arch dwgs. A rigorous structural analysis is
performed with three dimensional modeling using programs Etabs 9.0x,Safe
10.x,

1.2 Description Of project:

The project consists of Basement + GF + Roof & upper roof supporting the
tank

2.0 Design Criteria:

The building straining forces ( Gravitational and Lateral ) and capacity of the
structural resisting elements were determined in accordance to the
following codes of practice:

• The uniform building code UBC-97 for the determination of

lateral forces intensity and distribution ( earth quake and wind
pressures)
• ACI-318-02 for the determination of loads combinations, the
design and detailing of various concrete elements ( slabs, beams,
columns, walls and foundations)
• And as per the Structural Dwg no. SG-01
2.1 Dead loads:
The dead loads of the buildings are :

• Self weight of Structural elements based on preliminary

dimensions of the structural sections and materials specific
weight.
• Superimposed dead loads as derived from the contract dwgs.

( please see attached detailed report of Loads considered )

2.2 Live loads:

Super imposed live loads shall be as derived from the dwgs as per their
usage and Dwg no. SG-01

( please see attached detailed report of Loads considered )

2.3 Lateral loads:

2.3.1 Wind loads:

Wind loads shall be in accordance to ASCE 7-98 to UBC 97 with the
following parameters shall be considered:

• Wind speed 80(mph) as per the SAES

• Exposure type C
• Importance factor 1
• Gust Factor 0.85
• Directional Factor KD 1 (Direction perpendicular to
Building)

2.5 Analysis & Design

2.5.1 Numerical Analysis

The analysis of the building is performed using Etabs Software. The

following s are the assumptions made for different models.

• Slabs and Walls are represented by the shell finite elements (

triangles and quadrangles ), the raft foundation as thick plate, all
beams and columns as bar elements
• The Foundation are set on elastic supports ( Function of the sub
grade modulus of soil) considering modulus of subgrade reaction =
20000KH/m3

2.5.2 Columns, Beams and Foundations Numerical Analysis

Columns
The reinforced concrete columns were used mainly to resist gravitational
loads and the lateral loads induced by the building sway due to lateral
forces. They were represented in the numerical analysis frame element
fixed edge connections.
( Columns can be design Checked from Etabs Model)

Beams
Beams were used in the structural Analysis for the following.
• Beams to used support the slabs and transfer loads to the column
& walls.
• Reinforced concrete beams, fixed at their edges to the vertical
elements ( walls and /or columns ), the main role of these beams
was to induce a framing behavior to the lateral resisting system,
allowing therefore, the reduction of earth quake moments and
corresponding lateral sway of the building

( Beam reinforcement can be compared from SAFE concrete design )

Rib slab at first floor roof modeled as equivalent slab in etabs and modeled
as beams in safe program. ( See attached sample Manual design of ribs)

2.6 Foundations

Geotechnical Investigations revealed a strong soil type with the

bearing capacity of about 250Kn/M2 and recommended the use of
isolated/compared foundations. ( Soil Subgrade reaction=1.96x104 KN/M³
( Footings are checked for Safe bearing Capacity & Moments from SAFE
Model )

2.7 Soft Wares

• Advanced Computer soft ware, based on the finite element

methods (FEM), were used to evaluate the exerted forces on the
structure, as well as to calculate the building response.
• After assessing the staining stresses on the structural system
due to the applied gravitational and lateral forces, the Concrete
Columns and walls will be investigated accordingly.
• CIS Series : Etabs 9.0x For Analysis Modeling
• CIS Series: Safe 8.x For Raft and Slab Designs

2.8 Structural Materials

2.8.1 Concrete:

Concrete Compressive strength (fc’ Cylindrical) shall be as follows:

20 mpa For Lean Concrete & Concrete Fill

28 mpa For Foundations, Basement Walls , Grade Beams Etc.
28 mp Super structure & liquid retaining Structure.

2.8.2 Reinforcement:
Steel reinforcement shall be high Yield deformed bars grade 60 ( fy =
420mpa)
