5. UNITS

The dimensions used for analysis, design and drafting are in SI units.
6. DESIGN METHODOLOGY
6.1 General

Based on the limit state concept the structure has been designed to withstand safely all
loads liable to act on it throughout the life of the building. It has been ensured that the

2
design also satisfy the serviceability requirement like deflection and cracking before
failure occurs. The aim of the design was to achieve acceptable probabilities that the
structure will not become unfit for use for which it is intended.

Primary loads that are considered to act on the structure are dead load, live load and
seismic load which are briefly explained as follows:

For detailed load calculation refer Annexure 1.

6.2 Dead Loads (DL)

Dead load considered is inclusive of the weight of all structural and architectural
components, overhead water tank and all other permanently applied external
loads/fixtures. Self-weight of materials calculated as per IS 875: Part I: 1987.

6.3 Imposed Loads/ Live loads (LL)

Live loads that are considered as per Table 1 of IS 875: Part 2: 1987 consist of uniform
live loads. Uniform live loads are unit loads, which are sufficient to cater for movable and
transitory loads, such as weight of people, portable equipment or tools and the most
probable loads building may be subjected to during its lifetime.

6.4 Seismic Loads/ Earthquake Loads (EQL)

The structure has been designed as for Seismic forces acting in orthogonal directions in
accordance with the provisions of IS 1893 as per data given below:
Design Seismic Zone III
Zone factor ‘Z’ 0.16
Importance Factor 1.5
SMRF 5
Damping factor 5%
For arriving at the Design Seismic Load the following conditions applied based on the
stipulations of IS 1893.
a) The dead load along with 25% of Live Load has been considered wherever the live
load is less than or equal to 3kN/m2.
b) The dead load along with 50% of Live Load has been considered wherever the live
load is greater than 3kN/m2.
c) No Live Load has been considered on the roof.

3
6.5 Wind Loads (WL)
A basic wind speed of 39 m/s has to be considered as per IS 875: Part (3) for working
out the design wind speed. Since this is a steel roof structure for sheep house, wind
load is considered for the roof.

7. FOUNDATIONS
Recommendations by the Geo-technical expert is to provide isolated footing. Refer
Geo-Technical Investigation report of the site.

8. CLEAR COVER
Clear cover used for different structural components are given as follows:
Footing -50mm
Column -40 mm
\ Beam -25 mm
Slab -20 mm

9. DESIGN LOAD CASES & COMBINATIONS

9.1 General
Structures, buildings and foundations are designed for various load combinations that
may act together. Load combinations relevant for limit state design are adopted as per
the requirements of the IS 456:2000 and IS 800:2007.

9.2 Load Factors and Combinations

9.2.1 Limit state of collapse

The limit state of collapse combinations for buildings adopted are as listed below:

Partial Safety
Load Case Combination
Factor

Case (a) 1.5 DL + LL

Case (b) 1.2 DL + LL ± EQL

Case (c) 1.5 DL ± EQL

4
9.2.2 Limit state of serviceability

The service load combinations for general buildings adopted are as below.

Partial Safety
Load Case Combination
Factor

Case (d) 1.0 DL + LL

Case (e) 1.0, 0.8, 0.8 DL + LL ± EQL

Case (f) 1.0 DL ± EQL

10. DESIGN OF UNDERGROUND SUMP

RCC water storage sump designed as uncracked section in accordance with IS 3370 for
the following design consideration.
Inner (Water) Face – As uncracked section as per IS 3370
Outer face - As uncracked section as per IS 3370
10.1 Loading Cases
 Sump full with no earth outside
 Sump empty with full earth pressure outside including surcharge
i) Water table up to ground level
ii) Water table below base slab

11. DESIGN VALUES OF MATERIALS

For foundation, columns, sump & pump room:
Characteristic strength of concrete, fck: 30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of Steel, fy: 500 N/mm2

For remaining super structure:

Characteristic strength of concrete, fck: 30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of Steel, fy: 500 N/mm2

12. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS & DESIGN
Structural Analysis and design is carried out mainly using the software STAAD PRO
and manual calculations were adopted for components that were not passing or for
satisfying the ductility requirements as per IS 13920.
