The

definition
of sin
(see CCC,
nos.
1848-1851)
Sin is acting
or failing to
act, or a
power or
force that
leads us into
evil.
By sinning, we:
1. Sin is
refusing to
follow our
own
conscience’s
towards the
good.
“Conscience is
the man's
most secret
core and his
sanctuary.
There he is
alone with God
whose voice
echoes in his
depths.”
(GS, no. 16)
“Conscience is the
judgment of the
reason by which
the human person
recognizes the
moral quality of a
concrete act.”
(CCC, no. 1796)
2. Sin is
rejecting
God, our
Creator and
Lord.
3. Sin is
breaking
God’s loving
covenant
with us.
(CFC, no. 762)
The
Four
Manners
of Sin
1. Sins of thoughts

2. Sins of words

3. Sins of actions

4. Sins of omission
1. Sins of
Thoughts
- these are the
impure desires:
such as wishing
evil for others,
or craving for
their spouses or
goods. (Ex. 20:17,
Mt. 5:28)
2. Sins of Words
- these are lying
or cursing: such
as testify falsely
about our
neighbors, or
uttering bad
words. (Ex. 20:16,
Mt. 5:22)
3. Sins of
Actions
- these are wicked
acts against our
neighbors: such as
killing, stealing, or
committing
adultery. (Ex. 20:13 -
15, Lk. 18:19)
4. Sins of
Omissions
- these are the good
deeds that we failed
to do for our
neighbors: such as
refusing to share
our blessings with
the poor or
withdrawing our help
from the needy.
(Lk. 16:19-31)
The root
of sin is
the heart
of man, in
his free
will.
(cf. Mt 15:19-20)
Sins according to
degree:
1. Venial sin
– it involves a small
matter, such as
stealing a candy, and
can be forgiven with
a sincere act of
contrition, esp.
during the Penitential
Act of the Mass.
it is called venial,
from the Latin word
venia, meaning
“excusable,”
because it slightly
wounds the soul. It
does not lead to
spiritual death. “All
wrongdoing is sin,
but not all sin is
deadly.” (1 Jn. 15:17)
2. Mortal sin –
it involves a serious
matter, such as
stealing 50M pesos,
and can be forgiven
only through the
sacraments of
Baptism (Adult) or
Penance
(Reconciliation,
Confession).
It is called mortal,
from the Latin word
mortalis, meaning
“deadly,” (spiritual
death – a state of total
separation from God)
because it kills the
soul by removing
from it the
sanctifying grace.
(God’s presence making us
His holy ones)
Grace is a quality that is
infused into the soul.
It is a sharing in the
divine life. Hence,
it is not natural,
but supernatural.

Grace is God’s self-

communication;
His infused presence
in the soul of a
person.
Human persons are not born in a
state of grace. And there is
nothing we can do on our own to
earn grace. Rather, divine grace
is a freely bestowed quality. It is
true that we can reject grace; and
so we have to cooperate with
it. But it is grace that renders the
human person holy and
favourable to God. Hence, the
first effect of grace is that it
sanctifies (makes holy). No one
can be truly holy unless he or she
is in a state of grace.
For a sin to be
mortal, three
conditions must
together be met:
1. serious/ grave
matter,
2. full knowledge
3. full/complete
consent.
Christian Sense
of Sin

makes us

ourselves, others,
the community
and God.

our loved ones.
2. Sin alienates
(separates) us from
ourselves.
3. Sin alienates us
from others and the
community.
4. Sin alienates us
from God.
