INDONESIA
The contemporary music of Indonesia today is popular not only in the region
but also in the neighboring countries as through the interaction with other
cultures such as Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and European; a wide range of
musical styles has been developed. Indonesian music is quite diverse, as the
country is home to a wide range of ethnic groups spread across eighteen
thousand beautiful islands! Indonesian music has evolved over the years,
influenced by cultures from other countries. Islam being the religion of
majority of the population has had much impact on the music of the
country.

Two Basic Kinds of


Indonesian Music Scale

Slendro Peloq
five (5) equidistant tones heptatonic (7) tone scale
in one octave with semitone
Both vocal and instrumental music in
Indonesia use slendro and peloq scales.

The polyphonic stratification kind of melody is a result of hocket/Interlock.


Interlocking is a common technique used in gong ensembles.

Irama
- is an Indonesian term for tempo
It is the most popular and widely spread form of

Gamelan music in Indonesia. The word Gamelan comes from


Javanese which means mallet or hammer and is a
musical form which is performed with the help of
50-80 instrument orchestra.

The instruments involved include native


percussion drums and metallophones and it is
extensively practised in Bali, Java and Lombok
and it is claimed to be a court practice started
by God King Syang Hyang Guru.
