THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CULTURE
AND TECHNOLOGY

The relationship between technology and culture is

cylical. Logically, a culture will develop technologies
based on the needs or desires of the people, because
this is where the creative influences lie. as this
technology spreads and is absorbed into people;s
lives, it affects their culture and way of life.
THE ROLE OF ICT FOR
CULTURAL PURPOSES

ICT play an increasingly important role in fostering the

promotion of arts and cultural heritage educational
activities, as well as a mechanism for increasing cultural
participation.
THE ROLE OF ICT FOR
CULTURAL PURPOSES

For example, programs and actions in museum learning

environments, whose aim is to attract and serve visitors,
and to satisfy their needs.

Nowadays, museums seek to keep redefining their role

and to continuously transform their cultural
communication framework with the help of ICT methods
and tools, so as to become even more accessible and
create an even more participatory environment, enabling
visitors to actively engage into learning, educational and
amusing experiences.
IMPACTS OF ICT ON CULTURE

ICT has a huge impact on culture. The information

technology enables data access from anywhere, this
can uplift the level of education and awareness for
many people specially in rural area, also it can help
propagate instant messaging which also increases
people awareness and ensure their inclusion in
what’s happening around them.
IMPACTS OF ICT ON CULTURE

On the other hand, ICT made the whole world one small
village, which means that the trendy song, blockbuster movie
or best selling book in US or China is at the same time
available in Egypt, Iran and Singapore. And given that now
English is the universal language beside the abundance of the
teal sting tools and apps, all these facts surely affect the
cultures around the world.

e.g. newjeans' hype boy on tiktok

IMPACTS OF ICT ON CULTURE

The culture of a society is reflected in values, norms

and practices. Culture observes itself through
individuals to reflect their perception, practices,
values and in transfer of technology. Technology has
a crucial impact on fundamental aspects of all our
cultures including language, art, mobility, education
and religion. Culture of a community acts as a
standard for perceiving, judging and evaluating the
technology.
IMPACTS OF ICT ON CULTURE

As technology affects all the components of culture, it

determines the direction of cultural development. To occupy
the larger cultural dimension, technology should be in
harmony with social and cultural conditions of community
else there exists a friction between technological
development and preservation of cultural values. A rational
balance allows people to exercise freedom of expression in
technical world which is beyond one’s ethnicity, age, or
level of education. People use it for fulfilling their fantasies
but a cultural downfall may occur due to lack of restrictions,
regulation and/or consequences.
NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF ICT ON CULTURE

Social media and mobile devices may lead to psychological

and physical issues, such as eyestrain and difficulty
focusing on important tasks. They may also contribute to
more serious health conditions, such as depression.

The overuse of technology may have a more significant

impact on developing children and teenagers.

e.g. children that uses bad words/slurs

NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF ICT ON CULTURE

Connecting electronically can also lead to isolation which

is as a result of constant sensory stimulus of texts,
tweets, facebook, emails and more rather than thinking
and listening to each other. Dominance of western culture
on recessive culture can be vital example of negative
impact of technology

Example of research
on ethiopian children

Ethiopian children are given laptops in the context of an ICT for

development scheme. We compared children who use laptops
with children who are not provided with laptops for learning.
The results confirmed that after 1 year of laptop use,
children's self-concept became more independent
and children supported individualist values more strongly.
Cultural correlation with information communication
technology in various fields

UNIVERSITY, 2010 UNIVERSITY, 2014

As time moves forward, everything around us changes.
We have become a generation almost entirely
dependent on technology, and it goes without saying that
things were done very differently decades ago
than they are now.
Communication
Sending letters is one of our ancient ways to exchange news
or share information. Which is where children before the era of
technological development,
they liked to write letters and buy stamps.
Today, we actually use nothing but letters to communicate
with each other. Whether it's email, text, video chat, or instant
messaging, we have a wealth of technology that allows us to contact
each other without having to look for a mailbox.
TRANSPORTATION
In terms of transportation, if we look to the past,
we will find vehicles in the form of horse-drawn carriages,
camel rides, and rafts or canoes.

Then we move on to today where our current mode of

transportation is the definition of glamor.
Entertainment
Theater drama was one of the entertainments in the
past where if the drama contained additional or unique movements,
it added value to the drama.
Until now, it is rare for us to find traditional theaters except in
certain places. Now we can watch movies or cinema in theaters with
high-quality CGI and eye-pleasing visuals.
It can also be through cable television, Netflix, and certain
applications.
Video Games
As another example of cultural development influenced by ICT is how
today's children are fixated on smartphones or their computers.
They are no longer often seen
doing activities outside the home,
they spend their time indoors filling their spare time by playing games
whether PC or smartphone games.
Art
Some organizations use technology to preserve artistic and cultural heritage
threatened by war or the effects of globalization on the country.
The Institute of Digital Archeology used 3D technology to restore
the Triumphal Arch, a 2,000-year-old monument destroyed by war
in August 2015. Additionally, Architecture in Somalia used technology to
document pre-war buildings and monuments in Mogadishu.
EDUCATION
Education and utilization of knowledge is very important for the development of a nation,
even long before civilization was neatly formed.
In the pre-globalization era, education in general was marked by face-to-face teaching
and learning activities, and referred to books and paper as a medium for transferring
knowledge.
But in this era of globalization, digital technology is growing. Technology plays a very
important role in the world of education. Where the human role in managing education is
now being replaced by task or process automation activities. All presentation of
information, assignments, as well as learning and teaching processes can now be done
anywhere, not limited by space and time because it is possible to do everything online.
Many applications and online platforms support educational activities,
such as Google Classroom, YouTube, Zoom, and so on.
SPORT
Sport plays an important role in the healthy life of every individual, and is the longest
improvised branch of activity in history. Maybe in the era before globalization,
sports activities could only be trained directly with people who were experts in their
fields, and emphasized manual reasoning on things that could possibly happen.
But now, technological advances in the field of sports have led to fresh and innovative
ideas. For example, there have been many online sports training and learning platforms
and applications, without the need for teachers and athletes who we have to meet
face to face. Fitify is an online sports support application. The role of ICT in sports is
also very capable of supporting athletes' hard work from an early age,
so that they will be able to prepare early and be mature to face various forms
of challenging competitions.
CONCLUSION
The relationship between technology and culture is a relationship
that is interrelated and cannot be separated. The role of ICT is so
important in culture. While ICT have many positive impacts, there are also
negative impacts too.
But with the development of ICT, it also causes changes in local culture in
various fields, which is we hope that with the advancement of technological
developments,
it will bring more positive impacts for us.
In other words, culture of ICT can be defined how ICT means a lot
in our life or human life.
