TOPIC: SKETCHING A QUADRATIC FUNCTION

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER FROM TODAY’S LESSON

To sketch a quadratic function 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄,
A. Find the following points:

1) the point where the function intersects the x – axis i.e., the roots of the
function
2) the coordinates of the vertex i.e., the turning point of the function (h, k)
𝒃 𝒃
Recall: 𝒉 = − and 𝒌 = 𝒇(𝒉) or 𝒌 = 𝒇(− )
𝟐𝒂 𝟐𝒂
3) the coordinates of the y – intercept of the function i.e. (0, c)

B. Determine the shape of the parabola using the value of ‘a’.

Recall:
1) the parabola is concave up when a > 0
2) the parabola concave down when a < 0.

C. Join the points using a smooth-running curve.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASK

Sketch the following quadratic functions.
1) 𝑦 = 2𝑥 2 + 5𝑥 − 3

2) 𝑦 = 7𝑥 − 12 − 𝑥 2
