Answer: The amount of water consumed, Qwc or utilized directly by the consumers including the
water leakages, Qwl.
1.1.2. Peak factor (1)
Answer: Maximum demand over a given period of time divided by the average demand over the
same period of time.
1.2. What is the key difference between raw water and potable water? (1)
Answer: Raw water is untreated water not suitable for consumption, potable water is treated
water that can be consumed.
1.3. What are the 4 stages in order, included in the water supply management? (2)
Answer: Abstraction, treatment, transport, and distribution.

Question 2
Determine the quarterly production capacity (m3/s) of a treatment installation for a city with a
population of 1 235 000. Assume a specific consumption per capita of 150 l/c/d, non-domestic
water use of 6 350 000 m3/ quarter and UFW of 16%. (4)

A water supply company has delivered an annual quantity of 98 000 000 m3 to a city of 1.6 million
inhabitants. (i) Determine the estimated future specific demand (l/c/d) to be distributed in the
area after 5 years if the population growth rate per year of that area is 12%, (ii) In addition for
the current population, calculate the domestic consumption per capita (l/c/d) with leakage from
the system estimated at 13% of the total supply, and billed non-domestic consumption of
35 000 000 m3/year. (6)
