BSPSY-1101 Activity No.2

1. Socrates- He believed that self consists of two parts: the physical realm and the soul.
2. Plato- Self, as understood by Plato, has three components: the rational soul, spirited
soul and appetitive soul.
3. St. Augustine- His view of self is his relationship to God.
4. Rene Descartes- He argued that self is composed of two parts, namely, the mind and
the body.
5 John Locke- He stated that self is found on consciousness rather than the essence of
the soul or the body.
6. Hume- He claimed that a person's experiences are only set of ideas, including the
concept of self.
7. Sigmund Freud- Freud’s sense of self consists of conscious and unconscious self.
8. Gilbert Ryle- From Ryle’s standpoint, the concept of self is derived from human
behavior
9. Immanuel Kant- He considered that the self is not simply a person's personality, but
also a collection of knowledge.
10. Paul and Patricia Churchland- They believed that human brain activity is essential
for self-identity.
11. Maurice Merleau-Ponty- He believed that the self is perceived as a unified whole in
which the mental(mind) and physical (body) are connected.
