The Effect of Emotional Mental Stability on Health

Mental health is a type of health that is related to well-being. Even though it’s
important, it is still common to see mental health problems in society, for example, in
individuals with emerging adulthood periods. To understand mental health, there are
many kinds of domains that can be seen, such as emotion, which is the fundamental of
emotional intelligence.
The World Health Organization explains how mental health is a state of well
being or individual well-being that affects an individual's ability to realize their
abilities, to be able to cope with daily stress, to be able to work productively and
fruitfully, and to be able to contribute to their surroundings (WHO, 2012). In addition,
the mental health experienced by individuals will also affect physical health and
social health, as stated by Man well et al. (2015) regarding the "Trans domain Model
of Health". This explains how mental health acts as a basis for functioning and
adaptation related to cognitive and emotional levels related to social health, physical
health, or both. Therefore, mental health plays an important role in relation to
individual abilities in fulfillment in life such as building relationships, learning,
working, or fulfilling interests and decision making (WHO, 2012).
With mental health so close to life, it is necessary to look at the impact if
mental health is not maintained. This was conveyed by the Indonesian Ministry of
Health (2019), by looking at mental disorders which are manifestations of mental
health problems, contributing to the highest number of years lived with disabilities in
Indonesia. In addition, based on data obtained through the Institute for Health Metrics
and Evaluation (2021), in Indonesia itself, the mental disorders that often appear are
depression and anxiety disorders with percentages above 5% in the age range of 15 to
29 years. Therefore, the existence of mental health problems is an important issue that
can cause problems in Indonesia if they cannot be dealt with (Willenberg, et al., 2020).
In addition, the importance of paying attention to mental health does not only apply to
oneself but to society. Because according to WHO (2012) the impact of mental health
problems has a wide reach on society as a whole, so that it becomes a challenge for
world development, and individuals in the age range who are entering the stage of
emerging adulthood are one of them.
Regarding the emergence of mental health problems, Wang and Rajwani
(2015) and WHO (2012) saw how the risk factors that arise can be caused by the
interaction of the three determinants mental health. These three determinants consist
of individual determinants, economic and social determinants, and environmental
determinants. Determinants in individuals explain how the attribution inherent in the
individual and how behavior can influence. While determinants economic and social
focuses on the social environment as well as the economic conditions faced by
individuals can trigger problems, and environmental determinants refer to how socio-
cultural in the vicinity as well as the location and also the access provided can affect
health mentally.
Emotional intelligence on mental health has a significant positive influence
but weak, so it shows if the increase. Mental intelligence can improve mental health.
As for further research can an analysis of emotional intelligence is carried out through
the dimensions in it, so that it can be get richer information. In addition, in analyzing
it can also include other factors into testing such as demographics, social and
economic status and use samples at another stage of development.
