QUESTION 3: What have you learned and experienced from this trip? Your
own feelings about this practical tour to ICD.

After the interesting day at ICD Tan Cang - Long Binh in Bien Hoa under the
guidance of the guide and port staff, we learned a lot about the operation process,
warehouse management, and so on.

ICD Long Binh Company's sales staff also gave us a brief introduction to help us
learn more about the company's history, operations plan, and workplace safety
standards. Besides, we gained a better understanding of ICD Tan Cang - Long
Binh, a subsidiary of Saigon Newport Corporation and a leader in port operations,
maritime services, and logistics. The company had always focused on developing
core services: inland customs clearance (ICD) port services, warehousing business
including bonded warehouses, CFS warehouses, cold storage, general warehouse,
distribution center; loading, unloading, storing, and distributing import and export
goods; Customs services; forwarding services, transporting project goods, super-
long/ super-heavy goods. Import and export goods using road, sea, air,
international multimodal transportation, and inland transit.

During the visit, we were able to visit modern facilities and warehouses to learn
about the actual procedures of logistics service exploitation, sales, and operation.
The inspection yard was the first stop on the tour, where students saw the most
modern fixed container scanner in Vietnam and learned about centralized cargo
inspection at ICD.

The next stop was the CFS dry food retail outlet. Loading and unloading, packing,
controlling import and export, counting, consolidating, and dividing commodities
were all demonstrated here. When it came to loading and unloading, each
warehouse at ICD was equipped with doors that can accommodate small vehicles
and huge containers. There would be mechanical docks (sloping bridges for
transporting goods) at the large doors for loading and unloading goods from large
containers, as well as a warehouse with a suitable moderate slope for smaller
vehicles. The warehouse's design took advantage of the area's rough mountainous
terrain, which helped to cut building costs.

The warehouse number 19 was a domestic warehouse under the supervision of the
ICD corporation. To maintain the temperature and storage capacity of goods, the
warehouse was built to high regulatory standards. To avoid moisture concerns, the
goods would be carefully wrapped and placed on pallets. UEF students also
learned about the loading and unloading procedure, as well as particular symbols
for keeping items in the warehouse and container-specific information, at
warehouse number 19.
As a result, items at warehouse 19 were piled on pallets and would be stacked high
according to each unique item's regulations, and specialized vehicles would be
used to transport goods from one spot to another.

In addition, there were some interesting things we had been heard such as, Nestle
and Bach Hoa Xanh both rented bare warehouses at ICD Tan Cang in the form of
joint ventures. Normally, ICD Tan Cang rarely leased bare warehouses, all rented
warehouses must be placed under ICD's control to ensure safety as well as service
quality. Shopee also rented a bare warehouse here to store sale 6.6 goods before
shipping; Besides, we got to know about container seal and customs seals, each
container had these 2 seals, when the goods arrived, the staff must check if the seal
number was correct or not, then toke a picture before cutting the seal. In the case
that the inspection was not done carefully, the seal was wrong but still be cut,
especially the customs seal, it would be fined a lot of money, and it would take a
lot of time to redo the procedure; For packaged goods, the quality of the packaging
must be tested before being stacked, to avoid the case that when the goods were
stacked, the lower packaged were torn due to the inability to bear the weight and
pressure…

Overall, we would like to thank the Faculty of Economics, and especially our
lecturer
- Mr. Nguyen Dang Quang Huy, for organizing a field trip at ICD Tan Cang - Long
Binh in Bien Hoa to help us – UEFers - study in the most comprehensive way.
Through the last visit, students of the Transportation and Insurance class had a
wonderful day. We learned a lot more interesting things at the enterprise under the
guidance and answering questions wholeheartedly of staffs at the enterprise. The
visit gave us hours of practical experience about the theories we had learned in
class. Besides, the staffs at ICD with witty interpretability helped us understand
deeply about the operation process, as well as things need to notice and keep in
mind when working at the warehouse. All students, including us, were very excited
and listened attentively to the sharing of them. It was a bit of a pity that we could
not visit all types of warehouses, especially cool ones, because the weather was so
hot, there was nothing better than visiting cool storages. Honestly, under the
muggy weather, the staffs still conscientiously answered our questions in the state
of sweat drenching the back of the shirt, which were a very precious thing of all of
them. Afterall, these practical knowledges, as well as the sharing of the staffs
would be valuable documents for us to define more clearly and love the profession
we have chosen.
