Title: Human-Machine Interaction in Autonomous Vehicles: Design and Usability

Considerations

Rationale

As autonomous vehicle technology advances, the way in which humans interact with

these systems will become increasingly important. Autonomous vehicles rely on a combination

of sensors, algorithms, and machine learning to make decisions and navigate their environment,

but ultimately, a human passenger will still be present in the vehicle and may need to take

control in certain situations.

Designing effective human-machine interaction (HMI) in autonomous vehicles is

therefore crucial to ensure the safety and usability of these systems. This includes considering

the appropriate level of control and autonomy to offer the human user, as well as the design of

the user interface and the communication of information to the user.

Additionally, usability considerations are important to ensure that the HMI of

autonomous vehicles is intuitive and easy to use, particularly in emergency or high-stress

situations where clear and timely communication is vital.

Overall, examining human-machine interaction in autonomous vehicles and considering

design and usability issues can help ensure the safe and effective deployment of these systems.
Main Objective

To explore the current state of human-machine interaction (HMI) in autonomous

vehicles.

Specific Objectives

1. To identify the key design and usability considerations for HMI in autonomous

vehicles.

2. To raise awareness among designers and developers of autonomous vehicles about

the importance of HMI design and usability.

3. To provide recommendations for improving HMI in autonomous vehicles.

Scope and Delimitation

The scope of this study is to examine human-machine interaction (HMI) in autonomous

vehicles, with a focus on design and usability considerations. The study will include a review of

relevant literature and case studies, as well as original data collection through interviews,

surveys, or experiments. The study will consider various aspects of HMI in autonomous vehicles,

including the level of control and autonomy offered to the human user, the design of the user

interface, and the communication of information to the user.

In terms of delimitations, this study will focus specifically on HMI in autonomous

vehicles and will not cover other types of human-machine interaction, such as in aircraft or

industrial systems. The study will also not delve into the technical details of how autonomous

vehicle systems work, but will rather focus on the practical implications of HMI design and

usability for the user. Finally, this study will not include a comprehensive review of all available
autonomous vehicle systems, but will rather provide a general overview of HMI design and

usability in these systems.
