Q 1. In a mechanical spring-mass-damper system as shown in the Figure (a) below, the

mass is attached with the fixed surface through a spring element of stiffness and
the two masses & are coupled together with the spring element having stiffness
and a damper having a damping coefficient . The force is applied to the mass .
The displacements of masses & are denoted by and respectively; do the
following: (CLO1, PLO1)

(a) (10%) Determine the governing differential equations of motion for the given
mechanical system shown in Fig. (a) above.
(b) (10%) Find the transfer function between the control input and the output .
(c) (10%) Obtain the state-space model in vector-matrix form, where is the input
and is the output of the spring-mass-damper system.

Q2. For a system with the transfer function as: ( ) (CLO1, PLO1)
( )( )
(a) (20%) Calculate the unit step response of the system.
(b) (05%) Determine the steady-state value of the unit step response by letting .

Q 3. (25%) The position control is designed by a control engineer for the desired
course of a dynamical system. The block diagram of the system is shown in the Fig. (b)
below, where ( ) is the actual position of the dynamical system and ( ) is its desired
position. Perform the block diagram reduction in order to compute the transfer function

for this system. (CLO2, PLO2)

Q 4. (20%) Using Mason’s rule, find the transfer function, ( ) , for the system
( )
shown in the following Figure (c).
