THEORIES AND PRINCIPLES IN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION ( CHECK-UP TEST)

1. It involves in the learning about creation of new linguistic system and the learning of discourse
and communication functions of language. SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
2. It is an interrelated set of hypothesis and/or claims about how people become proficient in a
second language. THEORY OF SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION
3. Discuss or explain in not more than three (3) sentences.
a. “Fluency in second language performance is due to what we have acquired, not what
we have learned”.
The emphasis is not on what one learns but on what is acquired. It is in our
unconscious and informal knowledge of real communication that we attain the second
language. We obtain second language in our unintentional pick up of it through our
feelings and not through the language learning rules.
b. “Interaction and input are two major players in the process of acquisition.”
Language learning is not based on pure learning. It should also apply interaction
wherein the teachings will b more absorbed by the student. It is in this process of
communication where in language learning is applied and practiced.
c. “ If a child has a communication disorder, introducing a second language will make it
worse.” Agree or Disagree first then support your stand”.
I disagree on the statement given about a child being limited of his capabilities
due to his conditions. I believe that everyone is worthy of having a better tomorrow.
With the proper handling and assessment of the child’s case, he/she can obtain a
second language.
d. “All humans have an innate capability to acquire language. Children may acquire one or
more first languages.”
The environment and surroundings affect children, especially in the language
they acquire over time. To what language they are exposed, they unconsciously adapt
and use. It is a nature of ours to cope and develop with our surroundings towards the
best of our ability.
e. “The learnings of second language, particularly in an education setting often meets with
great difficulty and sometimes failure. We should therefore able to learn something
from a systematic study about language learning experience.”
Applied rules with regards to the language learning are beneficial for everyone.
It determines the outcomes from schools and brings a success in the industry.
Researches inclined in these fields should not be disregarded as they may still serve a
purpose in providing a better way towards the betterment of our learners.
4. Cite at least one CONCRETE REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE to support the following statements:
a. In language teaching, we must practice and practice, again and again.
I have tried to practice repeatedly on words I cannot spell correctly when I was
young. It has since improved my abilities and provided me more knowledge.
b. Language learning is mainly a matter of imitation.
I watch Korean shows and music videos. Here, I follow and repeat their words
and action which have taught me more about their background.
c. First, we must practice the separate sounds, then words, then sentences. That is the
natural order and is therefore right for learning a foreign language.
Whenever I watch K-dramas, I practice the pronunciations and appropriateness
of what they are saying. I have been able to decipher what and how their language
functions by observing and following an order.
d. Watch a small child’s speech development. First he listens, then he speaks.
Understanding always precedes speaking.
When my aunt had our cousin, we try our best to teach her our language. She
first listens to us and soon she asks about what we are saying so that she can adapt and
use it too.
e. Reading and writing are advanced stages of language development. The natural order
for first and second language learning is listening, speaking, reading, writing.
My uncle speaks Filipino. When he was new in our household, he listens to our
conversation. Soon he has learned to speak, read and write in our language.
f. A small child simply uses language. He does not learn a formal grammar.
We talk in Hiligaynon in front of our Tagalog speaking cousin. We once were
shocked to hear her say words in our language because of her observation with her
surroundings.
