4. Is language a part of our culture? Why?

Language is one of the most important parts of any culture. It is the way by
which people communicate with one another, build relationships, and create a
sense of community. As language began to develop, different cultural
communities put together collective understandings through sounds.

6. Make a short dialogue in English. Translate it to vernacular.

Which do you think a Grade One pupil will understand better? English or Vernacular?
Why?
 The woman said, “What did you want to do if for?”
 Hambal sang babaye ano akon gusto nga himu-on kung para

 The boy said, “I didn’t aim to.”

 Hambal sang lalaki indi ko gina hungod

 She said, “You a lie!”

 Kabutigan iya gina hambal

 By that time two or three people passed, stopped, turned to look, and some stood watching.
 Sang oras nga sadto duwa o tatlo ka tawo ang nag agi, nag pundo, nagbalikid para mag lantaw
kag ang iban nag kalay tindog lantaw.

I think the grade one pupil will understand English better because it is easier for children to
understand if English is used because when it comes to vernacular, other children are more
confused or do not understand what the teacher is saying in his class.

Answer the following questions.

1. What is the relevance of the mother tongue?

The relevance of the mother tongue is the language that a child gets to hear
after birth and helps give a definite shape to our feelings and thoughts. And
learning in the mother tongue is also crucial for improving other critical
thinking skills, second language learning, and literacy skills.

2. Give the advantages of the mother tongue. Explain each.

1.  Mother tongue education refers to education that uses language that children are most
familiar with. Children are most familiar with the language they speak at home. This
language, if taught in school, makes comprehension, understanding and learning easier.

Mother tongue in education refers to when a school the language a child is

most familiar with the mother tongue into the classroom lesson along with
the schools lesson such as English this is normally the language that the
child speak at home with their family. So we can understand and learn with
this language.

2.  Various surveys have revealed that kids learn faster and better in the language they have
been speaking in their homes. P Sree Nair of division For Child Studies, Centre for Economic
and Social Studies and UNICEF, has researched on the “Effects of medium of instruction on
learning levels.” This was the study on kids attending Telegu medium schools and the data
was gathered in Andhra Pradesh.

3.  P.Nair argues “learning levels of students can suffer at lower levels of schooling’’ if
they have English as the medium of instruction. The impact of this is most on kids from poor
background as they rarely get any support from the family in learning English or get help in
clearing basic concepts of different subjects taught in English.
Children enjoy more when taught in their own language, preventing the delays and hiccups in
learning. They enjoy school more and feel at home being surrounded by pupil and teachers
speaking a familiar language. They are confident of themselves and sure about picking up
new concepts with ease. This actually leads to higher self esteem in the students. Also, it is a
matter of pride to know one’s mother tongue thoroughly.

4.  It boosts confidence making a positive influence and shaping up the personality in an
unambiguous way. It saves them from unnecessary stress of getting lessons in a foreign
language and coping with its pressure. It ultimately leads to better academic performance of
children.

The parents being familiar with their native language finds it easier to get engaged with the
education of their ward. They find it easy to communicate with the teachers teaching their
kids. Academic research suggests that smart parents should stick with their native language
in their homes as this is the language they know best. English or for that matter any other
medium of teaching will take care of itself in time.

5.  Language is one of the most the important way of keeping the culture alive. Quite often
the direct translation from mother tongue to another language makes the script lose its
essence. Hence, proficiency in their native language develops a sense of belonging and
identity with the culture and heritage among children.

They develop a sense of pride and a strong sense of self identity. Fluency in their native
language is beneficial to a child. Everyone ways more than one and is important for the
overall development of a child. It makes students remain connected to their culture roots.

6.  Being taught in their mother tongue kinds of provide an equal opportunity to all regardless
of their status, geographic location or different ethnic backgrounds. In today’s interconnected
world if a person is well versed in the mother language, it becomes easier to communicate
and interact with the world at large and develop wonderful ideas that can lead the world from
the front. Being bilingual makes you stand out of the crowd and lead the way.

3. Do you think mother tongue hinders the learning of the English language among the
Hiligaynon speaking children? Why?
I think the students might feel inferior due to the effect of their mother tongue,
learners of the second language which is the Hiligaynon have a tendency to
transmit whatsoever they know from their first language to the second.

Humanism learning theory
Connectivism learning theory

2. Describe each learning theory.

Cognitive learning theories - is about understanding how the human mind works while

learning occurs through that internal processing of information.it based on the idea that
people mentally process the information they receive, rather than simply responding to
stimuli from the environment.
Behaviorism learning theories - is a popular concept that focuses on how students learn, this
learning theory states that behaviors are learned from the environment, and says that innate
or inherited factors have very little influence on behavior.
Constructivism learning theory – is an approach to learning that holds that people actively
construct or make their own knowledge and that reality is determined by the experience of
the learner.
Humanism learning theory – states that the student is the authority on how they learn, and
that all of their needs should be met in order for them to learn well.
Connectivism learning theory – is focuses on the idea that people learn when they have a
connection.it is a relatively new learning theory that suggest students should combine
thoughts theories and general information in a useful manner. It accepts that technology is a
major part of the learning process and that our constant connectedness give us opportunities
to make choice about our learning.

3. What is the importance of knowing the five learning theories?

An understanding of learning theories helps teachers connect to all different kinds of
students. Teachers can focus on different learning styles to reach different students, creating
