Trends summary
What follows is a brief summary of the key areas that have seen either upward or downward pressure.

Contract employment
As economic uncertainty has affected financial Enterprises and government organisations either

development has sustained the
long-term pressure for more
developers, with many businesses
looking to contract workforces.

Up
Businesses unprepared for working from home (WFH) or lacking maturity in
business continuity planning (BCP) have turned to technology specialists to fulfil Rate increases
their needs. In addition, with buyers moving online as WFH increases, businesses
of all sizes have called upon digital specialists to deliver stronger engagement and + Security Specialists

+ Digital Marketers
and create stickier digital experiences. + Software Developers/
Engineers
Continued digital product development has sustained the long-term pressure for
more developers, with many businesses looking to contract workforces. A short + Product/Application
surge in demand for service management product specialists and implementation Specialists
resources (like ServiceNow Consultants) during and post-lockdown drove their
hourly rates up as demand overtook talent supply.

Down
Many contract project teams were forced to take significant rate decreases Rate decreases
because of a halt or decrease in funding for projects that were underway following
the initial lockdowns. Much of this blood on the ground has already washed away
_ Project Managers
and rates have now begun to normalise for many occupations. Those who continue _ Testers
to feel it most are Project Managers and others in the project job family as large
capital intensive initiatives are paused, deferred or cancelled.

More recently however, those early in the project lifecycle (Business Analysts) are
being re-engaged, a sign that projects are kicking off again, with rates forecast to
gradually return to pre-COVID levels. Expect this to bounce up in 2021.

In general, consulting gigs have become more difficult to find and led to a
compression in rates. Interestingly, those who are assessing quality in a test or QA
capacity are seeing rates creep down, though it is unclear if this is based around
the COVID fallout, or if it is an extension of an overall trend.

Permanent/Full-time employment
Following months of compressed permanent hiring activity, demand for full-time
workers has been strengthening. While hiring was reduced by an estimated 80%+
from March, advertised technology jobs had increased roughly 50% by June, with
this upward trajectory continuing.

Complementing this, new hiring campaigns, job changes declared on social media

Though a shortage of permanent jobs remains, some roles have seen more demand
and in turn, salary increases. Security specialists, Developers (especially DevOps)
and Product Managers have all seen increases this year. Security workers have

+ Product Owners/
DevOps activity is up, given the requirement for development teams to WFH Managers
and increased requirements for businesses to have mature DevOps models and
processes in place. Product management is a little harder to understand, but as + Security Engineers
businesses embrace new customer demands and segments and/or pivot their
products, deeper customer knowledge, data and insights are critical to making new
bets for an opaque future. This demand is also an extension of long-term macro
trends for greater capability in product management for tech-centric businesses.

Down
Many have faced remuneration cuts, with hours reduced due to decreased demand
or businesses cutting pay to survive. Overall though, this has not reduced actual
salary rates by significant amounts. However, some occupations’ salaries have Salary decreases
