Management
ASSIGNMENT
How would the larger business environment change in the coming years esp given the
context of the pandemic, wars and economic upheaval?

 A need accelerated digital transformation was observed as the world had suddenly
become too fast based for the traditional way of working to keep up with and
adapt to.
 Organizations had and will have to to adapt to and accept hybrid and remote work
in order to contine the normal business routine with the constant rise of different
challenges such as COVID 19, Nipah, Floods and other such unprecedent events.
 Mental health awareness has and will continue to take center stage in businesses
as the lockdown and the pandemic made Companies and society as a whole more
accepting of it and the importance of mental health for a productive workforce.
 The rising temperature and the change in climate is something that no one is being
able to ignore and hence there is rising pressure on organization to function in a
sustainable manner and take up ownership of the carbon footprint that it leaves
behind.
 There is steep increase in expectation from the employees towards their employer
in terms of Health cover and insurance as an aftermath of the pandemic.

 Both the investors and the general consumer are expecting more from companies
in terms of ESG ( Environmental, Social and Governance) activities and this will
only increase going into the future as the damages arising from the post
industrialisation era becomes more evident.
 The world is smaller than a global village with Geo political tension in any part of
the world seemingly effecting business in some other seemingly random location,
the spider web connecting businesses have become exteremly complex and
interconnected. Businesses operating in this environment will have to be more
mindful of its own vulnerabilities and have contingencies in place for them.
 As technology advances there will be a need for constantly having to train and develop
the workforce for businesses to stay competitive.
 Data is already a driving factor in decision made in organization now and will continue to
grow in relevance as technology such as artificial intelligence steps in to make better use
of the available data and get better insights for business decisions.
 Organization will see humans and software bots working alongside with each other in the
coming future, with humans playing mostly super visionary role(hopfully) in routine and
mundane jobs.
 Countries such as Japan is seeing a retired work force back in the field with the help of
robotic augmentation and this trend will rise in other countries where there is a ageing
population
Byjus

 It was founded in 2011 by Byju Raveendran – this company is one where many of
my friends were working in, then over the years I have been updated regarding
what is happening within the company via them.
 It has been interesting to see its growth where it went on aa acquisition spree and
which was driven mostly by an over worked business development and sales
department.
 The initially pay of 8 Lakhs plus was an attractive incentive that drove many
graduates to join byjus in at the starting of their career.
 Then after the pandemic hit and the entire education sector had to go digital, byjus
being one of the biggest players in the market grew exponentially.
 This was again based on large amount of sales by the sales team who have been
accused of many unethical practices to meet their targets.
 Then came the collapse where Byju got into trouble ffrom all of its acquisition
and over expenditure on advertisement including hiring messi as brand
ambassador, etc.
 The firm fired employees on a massive scale and there was lot of news about
employee situation in the work place, where they didn’t know if they were going
to lose their jobs and the resulting mental anguish from it.
 Then later on Byjus changed their hiring policy for the same position being
offered at a lesser pay and including a probationary period which was absent
earlier.
 In summary, the trend that took place in all major IT companies with respect to
over hiring during the Covid period along with financial mismanagement can be
seen with respect to BYJUS.
 But it is not all bad, Byjus did start policy such as such as child care leave and
period leave to its employees when it was growing and doing well.
 The question of how it is going to evolve is one that can not be said to be
optimistic as the company is not doing well financially and it has proved in the
past that it is not so committed to its employees and the work place was highly
demanding and stressful.
 A major rebranding will be necessary for the company for it to attract talent
within the Ed tech industry and retain the ones who are presently there, changes in
employee policy (Byjus had made it a 6 day work week) and other such changes
would be needed for it to gain an employee friendly reputation among other
things.

How would the larger changes impact HRM practices?

 There would be a greater focus on talent acquisition and retention as talent

becomes more valuable with automation of every day work.
 Greater investment would be seen in the direction of employee training and
development to keep in pace with the new technological advances.
 There will be greater focus on employee well being as it has become an important
selling point for all organization to attract talent
 Virtual onboarding is an example of what is already a norm now and will continue
as it reduces the cost for hiring to a large extent.
 There will be greater emphasis on data driven HR practises that can help in
monitoring and improving the productivity level of the work force.
 The use of AI bots in the work force will also become a norm for companies , but
the side effects resulting from this such as unemployment will have to be taken
into consideration.
 The use of virtual spaces for companies to function will be an option that will be
explored by companies which seek to cut costs by not having to maintain a
physical office
OTHER TRENDS

 The rise of hybrid and remote work

 Talent shortages, upskilling and rise of new jobs
 Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)
 HR digitization
