MYP 1 Integrated Sciences

Grade: 6

Statement of Inquiry:

The energy choices we make can transform the world creating a more sustainable
environment.

Key Concept: Change

Related Concepts: Environment & transformation

Design an experiment to investigate one factor that affect the height of a roller coaster
train.

Goal: Task is to investigate one factor that affect the height of the roller coaster train.

Role: You are an engineer and you are an expert of roller coasters.

Audience: Owner of an amusement park.

Situation: John owns an amusement park and installed a giant roller coaster. For some
reason, the roller coaster train is not able to slide/roll up one of the slopes and stops
midway before starting to roll back.

John contacted you to investigate this problem and recommend a solution.

Use your knowledge about energy & energy conservation to isolate ONE factor that is
affecting the roller coaster and recommend a solution.

Product: Lab report giving details about how the chosen factor might affect the height a
roller coaster. (Possible factors: Mass of the car, Type of surface(friction), Height of the
slope, Length of the slope, angle of the 2nd slope etc.)

Aim/Question: (This can be written using the Goal)

Investigate the relationship between the height from where the toy car is released and the
stopping distance on the second slope when it is released on an inclined plane.

91
Here is an image of a possible setup diagram:

Materials: (List all the measuring instruments and the materials)

 retort stand (2)

 plastic ramp or inclined plane (4)
 toy car (1)
 meter ruler (1)
 marker (1)
 flat surface

prediction: (What could be the final outcome of the investigation. This should be a statement

relating the Independent Variable and the Dependent Variable)

my predict that as the hight of the plastic ramp is increased, the stopping distance of the toy car

will increase.

Give the reasoning for your prediction:

The reason for my prediction is I think that as I increase the hight of the plastic ramp, the toy

car will receive more kinetic potential energy which will allow the toy car to go further and the

9
stopping distance to increase. Another reason for me to predict is that

State the independent variable and the dependent variable in this investigation.

( DependentIndependent
variable :This is the variable that changes because of the change∈the IV )
variable :This is the variable that you would change

Independent variable: the hight (can be measured using protractor or meter ruler.)
Dependent variable: stopping distance (can be measured using meter ruler)

State all the control variables (These are the variables that should be kept constant)

1. the surface should remain flat.

2. The path the car is going should be straight.
3. The air-conditioning in the room should be kept to a minimum.
4. The weight of the car should remain the same.
5. The material of the car should remain the same.
6. The hight of the second slope.

Explain why it is important to control these variables.

It is important to control all these variables as if not we will not get accurate data and we
will not get accurate results.

Describe how they can be controlled.

The control variable can be controlled by:

1. The first control variable can be controlled by simply using the classroom floor of
the desktop.
2. The second variable can be controlled by using more plastic ramps and placing them
in a straight manner so the car will not go beyond.
3. The thirls variable can be controlled by simply using the air controlling remote to
keep the air-conditioning down.
4. the fourth variable can be controlled by using the same car or the same type of the
car throughout the experiment.
5. For the fifth variable again, we can use the same type and model of the car.
6. For the sixth variable you can keep it constant by

10
Procedure: (write a detailed procedure)

1. Get the retort stand.

2. Open the mouth of the retort stand.
3. Place the plastic stand inside the mouth of the retort stand.
4. Close the mouth of the retort stand.
5. Adjust the plastic ramp to be at a certain angle.
6. Follow the steps above for the second ramp.
7. Place the second retort stand in front of the first stand.
8. Get the meter ruler.
9. Place it where the first ramp stops.
10. Hold the car on the start of the first ramp.
11. Let the car go whenever ready.
12. Repeat this process while changing the angle of the first plastic ramp and collect the data.
13. Note your results on your document.

Suggest all the safety precautions for this investigation. (All the steps you might take to ensure that
you, your friends and the environment is safe in the process of completing this investigation)

1. Be careful when using the retort stand because you could squeeze your fingers in between
the clamp of the retort stand.

Table:

Stopping distance of the toy

S. No Hight of the first plastic ramp car on the second ramp. /
/ ° Meters (M)
1 20 ° 19m
2 30 ° 23 m
3 40 ° 30m
4 50 ° 33m
5 60 ° 35m

11
Interpret the data (using the table) and outline the data using correct scientific reasoning.

The outcome of the experiment was that as the hight of the first plastic ramp increases. the stopping
distance also increases. The reason for this is that when you increase the hight the car receives more
power causing it to go further. A good example of this would be when you are kicking a football if
you give the football a lot of power the football will go further.

State the validity of the hypothesis based on the data

The prediction I made was correct. As I predicted that as the hight of the first plastic ramp will
increase. The stopping distance will also increase.

State one limitation(possible) and recommend an improvement to overcome the limitation.

One of the limitations while doing this experiment was the maximum hight the plastic ramp could
go to because if the ramp was too hight the marble would bounce off the first ramp. We overcame
this by reducing the maximum hight of the experiment.

State one extension to the experiment.

One extension possible is that we also add another aim and do a different experiment and try to
connect it with this experiment. Because if we do that, we will be able to explore more ways
energy is used.

State the recommendation you would give John to solve the issue.

Dear john,

I hope this e-mail finds you well.

I am writing this e-mail to tell you that you should decrease the hight of the roller coaster. I think
you should either decrease the hight of the first or second sloap as when the hight is too hight the
car will not have enough energy or judes for the car to go up the ramp.
