Chief Elder : Leader Of The Community Who Gets Selected Every 10 Years And Tells Roll To

Giver : The Giver Trains The Receiver And then gives Up All His Memories

Announcer The name says it all

Scene 1:

Jonas - (clapping)
Chief elder : I know.that you are all concerned. That you feel I have made a mis-
take.

Chief elder : I have caused you anxiety, I apologize to

my community.

Crowd : 'We accept your apology,

Chief elder : Jonas,I apologize to you in particular. I caused you anguish.

Jonas : I accept your apology.
Chief elder : Please come to the stage now. Jonas has not been assigned, Jonas has been
selected.

Jonas : (blinking twice)

Chief elder : Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory

Jonas : (gasp)

Chief elder : Jonas please come up on stage.

Jonas : walks up to the stage

Chief elder : puts his hand on jonas’s shoulder

Chief elder : we had a selection, ten years ago. She failed. We shall not remember those times.
But the Receiver-in-training cannot be observed, can not be modified.

Chief elder (to jonas) : the training requires physical pain, yes, you might have hurt yourself
before. But it is nothing like that.the quality a giver should have, is the capacity to see beyond.

Jonas : looks across the crowd

Jonas - I think it's true,I don't understand it yet. I don't know what it is. But sometimes I see
something. And maybe it's beyond.

Community : JONAS. JONAS. JONAS

Chief elder hands Jonas a book of instructions.

Jonas : (goes home) (reading through the instructions.) omg! I can not tell anyone about my
sessions? I can not have medicine? I can lie? I cannot lie! That is against the rules of the
community!! This is a very hard assignment! I
Scene 2:

(Jonas goes to the door in the old home. He rings the doorbell.)

Jonas : uh- hi its the new giver — uhh i mean the

Giver : come in.

Attendant : welcome receiver

Jonas : please. (in an uncomfortable voice) call me jonas….

Attendant : you may go inside. Don’t worry there is nothing dangerous inside.

Giver : Welcome, Receiver of Memory.

Jonas : I apologize for not understanding...."But I thought — I

Mean i think I am the giver of memory..

Giver : Beginning today, this moment, at least to me, you are The Receiver.
I have been The Receiver for a long time. You can see that, can't you?
