Title: The Last Chance

Characters:
- JIM: a middle-aged man struggling with addiction
- LISA: Jim's wife
- JOHN: Jim's friend and sponsor in recovery

Setting:
A living room in Jim and Lisa's house, with a couch, coffee table, and a
few chairs.

Scene 1

(JIM is sitting on the couch, looking disheveled and holding a bottle of

alcohol. LISA is pacing nervously.)

LISA: (frustrated) Jim, why do you keep doing this to yourself?

JIM: (defensive) What are you talking about?

LISA: (angrily) You know what I'm talking about! You promised me you
wouldn't drink anymore.

JIM: (sighs) I am aware of this. I apologise.

LISA: (tearfully) Sorry isn't enough, Jim. You need to get help.

JIM: (stubbornly) I don't need help. I can handle this on my own.

(LISA looks at JIM with disappointment and walks out of the room. A
few moments later, JOHN enters.)
JOHN: Hey, Jim.

JIM: (surprised) John, what are you doing here?

JOHN: Lisa called me. She's worried about you.

JIM: (defensive) I don't need anyone to worry about me.

JOHN: (firmly) Jim, you're not fooling anyone. You're struggling with
addiction, and it's time to get help.

JIM: (sighs) I don't know if I can do it.

JOHN: (encouragingly) You can do it, Jim. You just need to take the
first step. Let me take you to a meeting.

(JIM looks at JOHN for a moment, then nods in agreement.)

Scene 2

(JIM and JOHN are sitting in a circle of chairs at a recovery meeting.

Other people are sharing their stories of addiction and recovery.)

PERSON 1: (sharing) I never thought I could break the cycle of

addiction, but with the help of this program, I've been sober for five
years.

PERSON 2: (sharing) It's not easy, but it's worth it. Finally, I can say
that I’m pleased with who I am.
(JIM is listening intently, tears welling up in his eyes.)

JOHN: (whispers to JIM) You're not alone, Jim.

(JIM nods, and the meeting continues.)

Scene 3

(JIM is back in his living room, looking more composed. LISA enters.)

LISA: (surprised) Jim, you're home early.

JIM: (apologetically) I know. I've been thinking a lot, and I realize that
I need to get help.

LISA: (relieved) Oh, Jim. I'm so glad to hear that.

JIM: (determined) John took me to a meeting, and I heard some

amazing stories of recovery. I want to try to do this.

LISA: (supportive) I'll be here for you every step of the way.

(JIM and LISA embrace, and the scene fades to black.)
