10.2 R 700 dampening unit

The R 700 is equipped with a newly-designed
Roland Deltamatic dampener.

From the central control console, the operator

can select/deselect the Delta effect as well as
integrated dampening.

With integrated dampening, the dampener is

connected to the first plate inking roller via a
bridge roller.
Integrated dampening is only possible with the
Delta effect switched off.

With the Delta effect, the peripheral speed of the

plate dampening roller is 8.2% slower than the
peripheral speed of the plate surface. This “slip”
has a cleansing effect that removes paper and
dirt particles from the plate.

The Roland Deltamatic dampener consists of:

Water fountain (1)
Water fountain roller (21)
A ceramic roller (Ø 100 mm) with its own drive
11.5
Metering roller (31)
11.4
Rubber roller (Ø 85 mm). This runs against the
402
water fountain roller with a speed differential.
Plate dampening roller (402) 31
Rubber roller (Ø 120,5 mm). It is driven by a 21
1
Delta drive. The plate dampening roller is set to
the water fountain roller and to the plate.
M7FEW001
Distributor roller (11.4)
Synthetic covered roller (Ø 63.5 mm). It is forced
against the plate dampening roller by spring
pressure. This pressure is adjustable. The stripe
width of this roller should be set to approx. 6
mm. The oscillation distance is coupled with the
bridge roller and is 20 mm.
Bridge roller (11.5)
Synthetic-covered roller (Ø 60 mm). It is forced
against the first plate inking roller and to the
plate dampening roller by spring pressure. This
pressure is adjustable.

Prerequisites for good results

To achieve consistent fountain solution feed with
the Deltamatic dampener, the ink stripe between
the metering roller and the water fountain roller
should be set to approx. 6 mm.

Isopropyl alcohol or isopropanol is used as

fountain solution additive.

Experience has shown that a concentration of

8% in the fountain solution is sufficient. With the
aid of modern fountain solution additives,
alcohol levels can be reduced to below 5%.

Fountain solution cooling is advantageous in

that the alcohol level can be kept low. Less
alcohol evaporates which means that the
percentage of alcohol stays constant for longer.
Cooling also prevents the inks from emulsifying.

When preparing the fountain solution, care must

be taken that water and alcohol are well mixed
before additives for regulating the pH value are
put into the solution.

The hydrogen ion content in aqueous solutions

determines whether the solution is acid or
alkaline. This reaction is described as the pH
value.

For optimal printed results, the pH value of the

fountain solution should be set to between 5 and
5.5 and stabilized at that value. This is a
requirement that must be met by the fountain
solution additive

It is essential that the dosages of additives

specified by the manufacturer are strictly
adhered to.

Because water hardness differs from region to

region, it is necessary to match the amount of
fountain solution additives to the actual water
hardness, which is measured in dH (deutsche
Härte = German hardness).

The hardness of water for offset printing should

not exceed 6 – 12° dH.

Since water quality is so varied, it is necessary

to formulate the fountain solution additives to
match local circumstances.

10.3 Dampening unit settings

Basic setting - metering roller to
water fountain roller
- The dampening unit must be activated at the
central control console.
- There must be no water in the water fountain.
- The rollers must be dry.
- The metering roller must be parallel with the
scale on the A side of the roller set to "0".

• Open the hinged guard in front of the

dampening unit.

• With your finger or a small roller, put a thin

M7FEW002a
film of ink on the metering roller at both ends
approx. 20 cm towards the middle.

• Turn the metering roller so that the ink mark

faces the water fountain roller.

• Start the makeready program for the printing

unit to be set.

• Engage the "STOP (secure)" button at the

preceding printing unit.

• Set the dampening rollers on.

• Set the dampening rollers off. M7FEW002b

• Turn the metering roller or water fountain

roller until the ink stripe is visible.
- The stripe should be 6 mm wide at both
sides.

• This can be adjusted using the setting

screws (3) at A and B sides.

• The metering roller can be cocked to the

water fountain roller using the setting screw
(4).
- The setting can be checked visually when
M7FEW002c
there is fountain solution in the water pan.
- There should be a thin and even film of
solution right across the metering roller.

Basic setting of the plate dampening

roller
This roller is set to the water fountain roller and
the printing plate.

To set the plate dampening roller to the water

fountain roller, proceed as follows:
• Start the "makeready" program at the printing
unit to be set.

• Open the dampening unit hinged guard.

The roller must not be in the cylinder gap

during setting. M7FEW002a

• With your finger or a small roller, put a thin

film of ink on the roller at both ends approx.
20 cm towards the middle.

• Turn the roller so that the ink mark faces the

water fountain roller.

• Engage the "STOP (secure)" button at the

preceding printing unit.

• Set the dampening rollers on.

• Set the dampening rollers off. M7FEW002b

• Turn the plate dampening roller until the ink

stripe is visible. The stripe should be approx.
6 mm wide.

• This can be adjusted using the setting

screws (2) at A and B sides.

Setting the roller to the printing plate:

• Apply a thin ink film to the plate dampening
roller. The stripe in this case should be
approx. 6 – 8 mm.
M7FEW002c

• This can be adjusted using the setting

screws (1) at A and B sides.

10.4 Shore hardness of the

dampening rollers
For all rubber rollers, the nature and quality of
the rubber is very important.

The Shore hardness is an important factor here.

The table below specifies the Shore hardness of

the dampening rollers:

Dampening roller hardness table

Nominal Shore A
Type of roller
hardness
Plate dampening roller 402 Approx. 28
- 31
Metering roller 31 Approx. 40
Water fountain roller 21 Ceramic
Distributor roller 11.4 Synthetic
Bridge roller 11.5 Synthetic

Any deviations should not exceed ± 2 in Shore

hardness.

The properties of the fresh water and the

fountain solution additives have a strong
influence on the printing process.

The fountain solution should have a dH value

between 6 and 12.

The pH value should be between 5.0 and 5.5.

The fountain solution should be changed every
200 operating hours and the water fountain and
the level monitor should be cleaned at the same
time.

Be sure to dispose of the fountain solution in

an environment-compatible manner.
