Test procedure “RPM / Load“
Note
• Unless regulatory requirements of the country define a different test procedure or test intervall, it is recommended to perform the
test “RPM / load“ at least every 2 years..

Note
• An external calibration device for dynamic load testing is needed to perfom the following test procedures

Electronic modules / Assembly
Overview
Description of electronic and cabling

The electronic of the ergoselect III is based on a modular

concept.
Each module has its own processor with the appropriate
software.

To communicate between different modules, the CAN bus

is used - a stable and standardized protocol used in the
automotive industrie.

The connection between different modules is made by

direct adaptation of the different PCBs or by use of
standard shielded CAT-5 patch cables.

The direct connectors and the cables carry the power lines
(24 volt) and the CAN bus signal lines.

Electronic carrier
Description

All electronic boards are mounted on a special metal

sheet integrated in the bottom plate of the ergoselect III
ergometers.

This metal sheet contains a grid of holes to mount all

possible combinations of electronic boards (e.g. LIU, SMU,
BPU).

Metal sheet carrier with mounting holes (grid)

PCB direct connector system

Metal sheet carrier, assembled (BPU, SMU, LIU)

Dismounting of the electronic assembly group

Place the ergometer on one side.

Remove 6 screws (see picture) and flip the carrier plate

carefully aside.

Remove the connecting cables from the corresponding

boards.

The PCBs are mounted on spacers, screwed from outside to

the metal sheet carrier.

After removing these screws, the PCBs can be separated.

After exchanging a board, the mounting is performed in

reverse order.

LIU - Load regulation and interface board

The elctronics of the LIU-PCB stabilizes the actual load of

the eddy current brake with the given accuracy.
The signal of the rpm sensor (non -contact hall sensor)
and the feedback signal of the strain gauge module are
analysed and the actual brake force adjusted accordingly.

In addition, the processor of the LIU board generates the

interface signals (RS-232 and USB) to external devices (e.g.
PC-ECG or ECG recorders).

Both signals (RS-232 and USB) are galvanically isolated

(opto couplers).

A remote pulse (to be used with control unit P or T only) is

addtionally available at the 9 pin DSUB jack.
The connecting cable contains a relay for maintaining the
galvanical isolation of the remote pulse.

USB interface

To use the communication via USB, a driver to generate a

virtual COM port has to be installed in the PC.

Download the driver for the used operating system from

the ergoline website and install it on the PC.

COM - Interface extension

If analogue signals (input and/or output) are required by

special ECG recorders, an optional module is available from
ergoline.
This COM module is connected with the standard 9 pin
DSUB interface connector and velcroed to the ergometer
housing.

COM Interface module (analogue)

A jumper adapter has to be placed onto the LIU board to

connect all required signals to the DSUB connector.

The COM module has to be activated in the service menu /

system configuration.
Subsequently the „ECG type“ in „Settings“ has to be
changed to „analog / digital“ or „analog“ (depending on the
ECG recorder used).

Hint
• The analog interface signals generated by the COM modu-
le are NOT galvanically isolated (separated).
• When connecting to an ECG recorder or another medical
electrical device the appropriate safety regulations and
norms have to be observed.

SMU - saddle motor / handlebar height motor

The control of the saddle motor is performed by the SMU
board.

The SMU has one connector for the motor (1) and another
coded connector (2) for the position sensor (actual motor
position).
Motor and sensor are connected with special cables

The SMU board is also used to control the motor for the
handlebar height - the determination of the function
(saddle or handlebar) is done by a special coding in the
connector of the position sensor (2). 3 3
The SMU boards are connected directly to the LIU (3) or
BPU.

handlebar pole by moving the handlebar with the motor
from the bottom position to the top position
• The movement should be smooth without stuttering

• If it is not possible to stabilize the handlebar with the

screws at the side (handlebar is still instable in the top
position), strengthen the 4 Allen screws on the front
side of the guidance.
These screws are locked with a nut. Use a 17mm fork
wrench or ring wrench to open the nuts and hold
them, while strengthen the inner screws for 1/16 th
