B) Anatomical Perspective.
i. The anterior part of the tongue is located within the oral
cavity while the posterior part of the tongue is located
within the oropharynx.
ii. The anterior part of the tongue is more muscular and mobile
as it contains intrinsic and extrinsic muscles that help in its
movement while the posterior part of the tongue is less
muscular and mobile and contains the base of the tongue.
iii. In the anterior part of the tongue, general sensation is
carried by the lingual nerve and taste sensation carried by
the chorda tympani nerve while in the posterior part of the
tongue both taste and general sensations are carried by the
Glossopharyngeal nerve.
iv. The mucus membrane in the anterior part of the tongue
contains numerous papillae which contain taste buds while
the mucus membrane of the posterior part of the tongue is
devoid of papillae.
v. The anterior part of the tongue is supplied by deep lingual
arteries while the posterior part of the tongue is supplied by
dorsal lingual arteries.
vi. The anterior part of the tongue is located rostral/cranial to
the foramen caecum while the posterior part of the tongue
is located caudal to foramen caecum.
vii. The anterior part of the tongue has more taste buds while
the posterior part of the tongue has less taste buds.
COMPARISON
• Both parts have taste buds.
• Mucus membranes and taste buds of both the anterior and
posterior of the tongue develop from pharyngeal arches.
• They are supplied by the lingual artery.
• They are both drained by the lingual vein.
