How many types of germs do you know of? Collect information and present it to
the class. You can use the key word Germs.

I know four types of germs: Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, and Protozoa. These are the four
categories germs are divided into.

Germs are a small mass of living substance capable of developing into an organism or one
of its parts.

Bacteria are small single-celled organisms. Bacteria are found almost everywhere on Earth
and are vital to the planet's ecosystems. Some species can live under extreme conditions of
temperature and pressure. The human body is full of bacteria, and in fact is estimated to
contain more bacterial cells than human cells. Bacteria are found on surfaces and in
substances like water, soil, and food, making them key players in the Earth's ecosystems.

A virus is a small collection of genetic code, the DNA is surrounded by a protein coat. A
virus cannot replicate alone. Viruses must infect cells and use components of the host cell to
make copies of themselves. Often, they kill the host cell in the process, and cause damage to
the host organism.

Fungi are member of a kingdom of organisms that lack chlorophyll, leaves, true stems, and
roots. They reproduce by spores, and live as saprotrophs (organism that feeds on nonliving
organic matter) or parasites. The group includes moulds, mildews, rusts, yeasts, and
mushrooms. They cannot make their own food and have important roles in nutrient cycling in
an ecosystem.

Protozoa is an informal term for a group of single-celled eukaryotes, either free-living or

parasitic, that feed on organic matter such as other microorganisms or organic tissues and
debris.
