More and more people want to buy clothes, cars and other products from well-known

brands. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

There is no doubt that in modern society, the number of people spending their money on
luxurious brands is increasing. This trend can be attributed to several reasons, and I consider this
is a negative development.
There are two main reasons associated with this tendency. First of all, owning famous products is
an easy way for someone to show their social status. This is because almost wealthy people can
purchase commodities from big brands name, so they are more likely to receive respect and
admiration from other people. For instance, a man driving a ferrari may gain more attention
when he emerges in public compared to whom owns an inexpensive car. Futhermore, using well-
known products can bring a sense of satisfaction. For example, when a lady posts some pictures
with her Louis Vuitton bags on Instagram, she may get a number of likes and positive comments
not only about her gorgeous appearance but also about her luxurious bags.
Nevertheless, I deem pursuing a luxurious lifestyle may present some drawbacks. Firstly, this
tendency can promote consumerism. To be more specific, the repetition of famous brands
advertisements is likely to persuade consumers, especially young people, to purchase costly
products though it may not affordable for them. Secondly, this trend may lead to the dominance
of big brand names. Thus, a number of small companies can lose their positions and easily go to
bankrupt.
In conclusion, showing social status and having a sense of satisfaction are the common reasons
why many people nowadays choose to devote most of their money on owning extravagant
products from famous brand. However, I believe that this trend is detrimental due to the
promotion of consumerism and the disappearance of small businesses.
